Default What is the brake fluid check switch for?

Replacing the brake master cylinder on my 86.5 and cleaning the brake master cylinder reservoir (see my thread by that title) I started to wonder what the push button switch on top of the reservoir is for. The WSM identifies a "brake fluid check switch" which grounds pin 23 of the CI module (black side) while pressed, but that is all I have been able to learn. Anyone know what this is for?

My understanding is that it is to check that the low fluid level warning system is working.
