Default 928 windows not working

Hi all, I'm a new porsche 928 owner, it is a 1979 with manual transmission. The car looks straight but as a project it needs work since it has been sitting with the previous owner for about 10 years. So I started educating myself by reading rennlist wonderful forums for the past 3 months. I then made a very long list of what needs to be done on the car. Changing hoses, flushing systems and so forth. My one thing that I can't figure out is that the power windows aren't working, sure enough I read many nice forums about that issue mostly recommended either clean and fix the switches or buy new ones, I went ahead and bought only one (as I'm not sure what the problem is) that just arrived today, I installed it this morning (after suffering with the tight space to connect) but still windows are not working, however I hear a very passive click sound once I click one the switch, the sound is like an electric connection that had been established in the door once I push the switch. So here is my issue, I am not sure what to look for? How do I know if the motors or the relays, I guess I need to know where to start. Thank you in advance for helping a beginer like myself to start working on his dream car.

Welcome to the board!

I'd do a few things first:

- Search for Alan's fuse and relay chart for your year. That week give you what fuses / relay are applicable to your car.

- check for continuity at the plug fire the switches. A voltmeter will be your friend.

- You can apply power directly to the window motor(s). That'll tell you if the motor is operational.

- clean your grounds and CE panel. Might not fix this issue, but won't hurt.

Are all your switches not working?

Thank you Itoolio, I appreciate it, I will start doing that by tomorrow, yes both switches are not working.

After looking at the pdf, try swapping Relay VI with one of the other ones of the same type (X, XXI our XXII).- that'll isolate if it's a bad relay.

Quick and dirty test:

Push either (or both) window switch with the headlights on. Do the lights dim when the switch is pushed? If not, power isn't getting to the motor. Problem is somewhere in the switch, relay, fuse or wiring. If they do, motor is drawing power. Motor could be bad, window could be jammed.

Check both up & down, even if the window is all the way up (or down).

Thanks for the suggestion Joe, I just tried it now and headlights do dim very little when pushing the window switch. Is it possible that both window motors are bad? And if window is jammed, how can I release it?

Seems odd that both would go, but is definetely possible. Have you tried the Relay Swap yet?

Re: jammed:

- You'll need to remove the door cards and poke around inside. Check, clean and lube the slide guides, and you can also use it to clean up the motors themselves:

Itolioo, I will swap the relays in a few and will keep you posted, thanks for the nice link. We had some rain here recently and when it was over I actually noticed that when I opened both doors they were dripping water, apparently they were collecting water, so that's a possibility that the motor got damaged or so. Is there a thread about removing the interior leather & plastic panels of the door to inspect the motor?

Here are a couple:

http://928.jorj7.com/wk-door-handle.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...oor-panel.html

Also, FWIW - I started to collect the How-To threads that I've found useful to the work that I've done on my car:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...to-thread.html

As you'll see, a number of people also replied with a *bunch* of additional how-to resources that are available.

I started the thread as a way for me to keep track of the ones that I've used / have found useful as I've gone through and done stuff on my car so that I could refer back to them if I ever need to do similar work.

You might want to order some new plastic trim clips...the door panels are held on by a combination of these clips and some screws or bolts...at least my '86 is like that, and I assume yours is as well. Those clips will definitely break...even brand new, removing and replacing those panels multiple times will cause the clips to lose their shape and, as a result, their grip. That doesn't solve your problem but when you do and you go to put the panels back on, you'll be glad you have them.

Excellent point. I had to replace a good 10 of them on mine - both from me breaking them during uninstall and the PO removing some and not replacing them.

You can get them here:

Also - the armrest repair kit works very well if some of your mounting holes are broken. Mine were, and it makes a world of difference in stability.

Hey thank you so much guys for the great suggestions, quick update, I did switch the relays but everything is still the same so I guess that's not the issue, which leaves me with the bad motor possibility since the doors were collecting water during rain. I will hold off on taking the door panels off because one of the projects to be done is going to do some serious upholstery for the interrior, will probably get that done by someone who is familier with 928 here is southern California, until then I will try to servive with the situation. I am open for suggestions if someone knows a good place to go in order to redo the interior. Thanks again.
