Best 928 exhaust sound in motion

I just wish I had the stock exhaust
Well, half of it is stock, but not the good half (headers and cat). A PO had the back half replaced with a cheap aftermarket muffler. It sounds good at idle, and lackluster everywhere else. At least the intake noise is pleasant.

Exhaust note is very subjective but nonetheless very pleasing if you happen to like the sound it is producing.
The track car video posted by Hacker is awesome but that noise is not made by a RMB [pleasant as they are]. Louie's 928- well that is something else and yet it is well capable as a daily driver even with 600 rwhp. My exhaust is modelled on Louie's [x-pipe, Bullett mufflers & RMB] and sounds rather well albeit mine still has stock 2 1/4 inch pipes- just wish I had some of the additional 300 bhp going through them!
Many years ago my dear wife [who knows little about cars and is not in the least bit interested in them as long as they work] was loading up in the car park of a local supermarket next to a main highway. With her were our two [then quite young] daughters when suddenly they heard a car accelerating hard about half a mile away with the noise drowning out the rest of the vehicles on the road. My wife nonchalently said to our daughters- "that sounds like your Dad's car"- it was!
One thing I have consistently noted with my 928 and motorcycle customised exhausts is that they always sound far better when listening to them externally with someone else driving them. Must be the Doppler effect.

Fred - I think you are correct. The Doppler effect contributes to the perception of speed or motion. I think it's a significant factor in how we perceive sound.

I think a 600 rwhp can sound how it wants- it's sufficiently built that the incremental difference in flow/power is warranted, and it can back up its bluster.
To me, a raucaus/loud 300hp porsche- unless stripped and/or a track car is a Eurofartcan in my subjective opinion. But, I'm a strong advocate of everyone being able to do whatever they want to craft a car meets their own goals. Some folks that live in rural areas, or areas with more liberal speed regs/enforcement access tracks often, and generally manage to enjoy longer periods with the engine singing in the upper register, I guess I get that.
Mine is factory manifolds, modified Ott X, 300 cell cats, 928MS mids and a large case magnaflow final. At idle its occasionally sets off car alarms when rolling past- and I DONT like that and plan to dampen it down a bit next round of changes. I do like the tone though.
It is tough to balance a smooth, assertive idle with reasonable 2/3-3/4 throttle sound levels. I think you'll like the results from your planned COA.

Erik no doubt the 928 16v motors sound better than the 32v motors.
The car in the link below, IMO, was the best-sounding at Road America, all time. For comparison, 2nd place goes to the ALMS GT Aston Martins of 10 years ago.
That is Jean-Louis and Agnes Picouet's car, with Agnes driving, and a really fast Z06 driver in hot pursuit. That's exiting Turn 14 onto the front straight, and hitting about 150 mph at the braking point heading into Turn 1.
Make sure to crank the volume:

I know I briefly experiemented with an RMB on my MY89 S4. After a short drive on the highway and resulting almost migraine from the drone at legal highway speeds, I promptly replaced with the standard pumpkin muffler. At that time I also had fitted a stainless steel X-pipe (928sRUS) and hi flow cats. From what I have read on this matter is that the post MY88 S4s come with smaller (GT style) rear reasonators and that the RMB in an S$ is probably better suited to an S4 with the larger resonators.
Cheers
Tony 928 S4 MY89, x-pipe, hi flow cats, std rear muffler & resonators

It's really hard to tell what an exhaust is like to live with, from an outside-the-car recording. I had an exhaust on my RX-7 that sounded amazing coming down the road, but it had a terribly annoying drone in the cabin at normal cruise RPMs.
Currently, my shark exhaust sounds fantastic, and non-annoying at cruise, with headers, cats and Borla (no pre-silencers). I have an x-pipe to replace the cats, but I'm a little worried I'll end up with something that annoys me at cruise. If it's louder when getting on it, fine...

Some may find this "sound-off" vid I shot a few years at Sharks in Hell a interesting insight into the various sounds 928s can make. Dennis' (RIP) Weissach is still the best sounding 928 I've ever heard.

All previous contributions are nice, but it's the Devek white car with their Level 2 headers FTW.

I posted a few drive by's on YouTube - 16v and 32v... you can get them there or at our site also.

Your 32V system video soundtrack sounded very sweet to my ears!
