They were covered up after the photo was taken. I took time to shine a light into each port and look for crude on the back of the valve, found none all of the valves were clean and shiny.

Made progress today, cleaning done for the most part. Exhaust studs out, one remaining, it broke off at the head. Will drill it out, chase the threads and install new stainless steel studs. No show stoppers yet. Ordered parts again, picking up little things that need replacement. Am worried about the engine harness in place is very stiff and the sheathing is toasted in several places, going to be very careful putting it back in.

If you're going to all this trouble you might consider a new harness. A few people on here make some very nice well built ones.

Ran into a show stopper today, the factory exhaust manifold (drivers side) has a huge crack on the first cylinder on that bank. No way it is going back in. The car is a Euro so there may be issues with manifolds, ROW vs US. Trying to get a manifold to keep the project moving.

With the help of others a pair of manifolds was located, and is on the way to Vermont. I now owe Tass , big time. Will be sending him a bottle from the cellar, something old and Italian, from an old Italian. People like Tass are the reason we can keep these cars on the road. Once again the the 928 community helps out big time.

It has been awhile since I posted on the progress. Several decisions to do it "while the engine is out" has cost us time mostly due to parts shipping. But we are well on our way to getting the engine back to complete. Still have the blue hose to replace with a hard line and make it easier to bleed. The good part about the progress is we are now working with new and CLEAN parts.

Why replace the blue hose with a hard line? Have I missed the boat on that mod?

Also, I wouldn't go stainless on exhaust manifold studs. I'd stick with steel and aluminum anti seize.

How would a hardline mount on the plastic nipples at both ends of its run?

A number of decisions because we had the engine out. The TB/WP did was not in need of doing but I did decide to redo the bearings on the idler the idler because they felt a bit loose. I decided to add a baffle to the oil fill system to cut down the oil thrown by the crank ending up in the plenum. Decided to replace various plastic parts (belt covers that were either cracked badly or parts broken off over the last 35 years) replaced with good used parts. I also have to admit I missed some of the parts needed in the first part order and that one part ordered was because I ham fisted a part and broke it during disassembly.

The hard line replacement for the blue hose is a never want to worry about it again thing, I plan on routing the line so it is easier to bleed and going metal for the fittings. The reality is that I plan on not ever doing this again so as little things crop up I fix them.

I have some repairs that need to be made to the wiring harness before it goes back in mostly replacing worn shielding and reattaching small connectors. Call it me being over concerned about doing it right

Most likely it is over doing it but not much work now verses doing with the engine in.

Been sort of slow with the work for a while. However today got quite a bit done. accomplished the timing belt is was installed everything needs a final check for torque specs and the covers go back on. Will do the rear cam and gaskets and cis injection tomorrow. I hope to be driving it next week.

Got the flywheel off the crank so the rear main seal can go in, just a little cleaning before the seal goes in. All that's left is reassembly the and its on the road again. Really looking forward to having a 928 that does not leak fluids.
