Default Conti Sport contact vs Potenza SO2

I still have the stock wheels on my 91GT so rear tyres of 245/45/16 are very hard to source. I need to choose between Conti sport contact or some Bridgestone Potenza SO2 I managed to track down (I believe these are now discontinued).

Appreciate any feedback if you have used these.

Price wise not much difference between them##

Thanks

It is not a good idea to buy a discontinued tire.....first you need to check how old they are...second should you destroy a tire due to road hazard, nail in a sidewall ,where do you find a replacement ??

Both are good but I would go with the Conti Sport Contact. The Potenzas on my BMW hardened out (after many kilometers) while the Sport Contact on the 928 (less kilometers) are still fairly good after 5 years.

Thanks for the feedback....I read on internet reviews as well that the potenzas were better on the first half of wear (and they worn down fast).

Also very valid point on replacing a rear tyre at a later stage....

Potenza's re-11's are also a great choice. They won't come up due to the spreading rating. Search tire rack manually.

I've gone through several sets of Potenza RE-11s. Probably the best tire you can buy - short of the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (which isn't available in 16" sizes)....

The only downside is they get pretty "square" if you don't drive on them for a couple of days.

Tire rack now shows Toyo supplying a Proxes T1R 245/45zr16 rear tire with a 280 wear rating. I had this tire on my wife's 2003 Mercedes SL 500 and they rode well.

Toyo T1R are the only choice here in Oz these days. I like them - good grip (dry and wet) and quiet running. 7k miles on mine so far.

Annoyingly the Europeans can still buy Pilot Sports in the correct sizes for stock 225 and 245 widths for 16" rims.

Hilton, I found the SO2 on an Austrian web site. They are no longer available in the UK (apparently on back order and will be available in a couple of months time in the correct size.....but I wont bet my house on it...)

The RE 11 look great but not available in the 245/45/16

Not sure about current availability and you may have to search for them or special order them, but Bridgestone brought the RE 11 back in the 245/45/16 size - mainly because that was the stock size for the 930 (they didn't do it for us 928'ers - just a happy coincidence ...)

You need to contact Tirerack directly for these tires, if you can't find them on the website.

Might consider purchasing some 18 or 19 inch rims

tire selection is huge on these size and they are always on sale

I pulled the factory rims and put them in storage. Too little selection of tires. Ended up with some 18 inch cup 3 from ebay.
