yesterday i pulled 0-60 in 5.6 in an auto, even though the auto manual says 6.3. however my car is chipped, so i'm guessing thats what helped me out. it wasnt even a good start. what kind of times has anyone else else done?

Isn't it supposed to be 0-62 mph, not 0-60 mph? pretty darn difficult to get an accurate reading of 60 (or 62) mph, and even harder to operate the stopwatch accurately. Also, who was driving, and who did the timing?
Which wheel/tire size combo are you using? what was the temperature, speed and heading of the wind...lol...just kidding
I'd say your timing is well within the allowed human error(s) from factory numbers...but hey, to be in the 5 second range is cool

well you can call it 0-62 if you want to record a 0-100 Km/Hr...but im not european so it doesnt really matter to me. all i know is that i can hit a hundo on a freeway onramp...not that i do, its just good to know that i can be traveling faster than the flow of traffic so i can get on the freeway easier.

I understand that the factory times are conservative on purpose to cover variables among individual cars of the same model and other variables. In other words, if the factory says 6.2 seconds, it means ANY example of that model year with that configuration will do it in, at most, 6.2 seconds. Often, the published times are exceeded by most examples. If they said your car would do it in 5.5 seconds and it didn't....not too cool.

What Ron_H said.
A year I ago I did 0-60 in 5.8 sec with my 89 S-4.
I was at sea level on a very flat road near the ocean. I did 5 runs the best was 5.6 the worst was 6.0.
I started by holding down the brakes, downshifting to 2 and getting the RPMS to about 1500 then floored it and released the brakes at the same time.
At the time the only mod I had was a K&N air filter and I think 17" wheels.
I used a G-Tech pro to clock the car.

I know a G-Tech would be a lot easier to time runs with, and probably be more consistent than a stop watch. Has anybody ever check the actual accuracy of one of the G-Techs though. Maybe at a drag strip?

Pete,
I have checked both the G-Tech and the G-Tech pro against the timed 1/4 and found them to be pretty durn close. Best - off .1 sec. , worst - off .2 sec on the 1/4. As always, YMMV.
Near sea-level, I run between 5.7 and 5.9 to 60 in my '84 a/t. But it has a few mods.

Burning Brakes
I've read many places that the G-Tech is unreliable. Some say very unreliable. Don't remember if it was the timer or any of it's other functions. Most say it's just a fun toy to have.

Funny, but a bit OT

Funny story, it was back in Chicago when I lived there. It was pretty much around thanksgiving or so, maybe past it, so it was not warm in any way. I had my black 89S4 all waxed up and shined, tan interior (blech) all clean too. I had to drive a family member back from a restaurant to the house, and then back to my own place tp pick something up. Well, there's a highway inbetween. We were talking about the car, and how he liked the tan leather (which I have since pulled, even though it was pretty new looking). In the middle of the convo, I downshifted to 1st around a slight bend to get on the highway, and pretty much rowed through the gears at full throttle until the mid part of fourth....
He had stopped talking about half way though second, and stayed quiet, while sitting there with no emotion on his face at all, until I slowed back down to about 95, and he simply looked over, and said...
"Now THATS how you merge man!"
Gas used during exhibition of speed and power - 2 dollars
Possible ticket for 130mph in a 55 - 500 dollars
Relative telling you you got it right - Priceless.

Greg, that is pretty darn fast for a A/T '84. What modifications do you have?? Explain! :-)))
Am I the only one, but I remember advertisements of 0-60 in 5.0 for 928 GTS in Road & Track many years ago. The manual (and some internet sites) quotes 0-60 in 5.5 to 5.7 secs.

Giovanni,
As far as the engine stuff goes, freshly (well, now in the last 25k) redone heads, mild port work, mild cams, very mild fuel mods, S-4 headers (the tubulars), dual cats (off a GTS), 85 exhaust (dual pipes all the way back).
Also running a 28.18 a/t (off a GTS as well), gives a slightly lower overall ratio in the first coupla gears compared to an original 84 (they came with a really tall rear end).
And a K&N filter -which is where I get all the extra ponies ;-)...
This is really not a shocking performance when compared to a good running euro-spec of the same year. Those cars were rated at 300+ HP from the factory with the 4.7L.
