Don--
You are in excellent hands with Dan W working on the car. It will be interesting to see what the suction strainer looks like when he gets it removed. It's a bit of nylon sock that is supposed to keep the rocks out of the pump. If it's clogged or is disintegrating, it certainly would contribute to the pump symptoms. Particularly if the symptoms started right after a fill-up, I wouldn't plan on gas from that station on the way home.
Travel safe, enjoy the ride!

Dan got us taken care of in less than 2 hours. He even delivered us to a nearby upscale shopping center where we ate lunch and he picked us up when the car was ready. He said that the fuel in the filter was VERY hot, much hotter than he normally sees and hotter than the tank gas. His theory is that the issues with the FP were causing it to super heat the gas, causing the issues Bob described. I've got the old pump and he said I should test how many amps it's pulling when I get home. He suspects it's pulling a lot of amps and heating up.
The strainer doesn't look bad at all for 30 years of use. It doesn't look clogged and has no visible holes in it.
I was really impressed with Dan and his shop. Probably the nicest mechanic I've run into in years. Phoenix is lucky to have him in town. He's also got some interesting projects. Check out this custom spider intake on his track car.
We should now be good for the slow drive home over the next few days. Thanks to all contributed to troubleshooting the issue. I've learned a lot for sure (think twice about taking a 30 year old car cross country :-) )

there have been a few cases where the screen came loose from the bung and floats around in the tank until the solid end gets sucked up to the outlet cutting off the fuel...shut down tow the car and the screen moves away from the outlet and car starts and runs fine.....until the screen end get sucked up to the outlet again......yes it happens

funny thing with the 928,
the more you drive it the better it runs.
Don , I am glad you got a new pump installed,
I hope the rest of your trip will be non eventful.

Keynote speaker (and state president of) at a commercial van owner's association conference years ago was a Dutchman by the name of Van Fleet. No kidding. :-)
Sorry - couldn't resist.

The car is still running good, but now we have a tropical storm crossing our path home to Houston today. Could be interesting...
