Well, .. that's not exactly what he said.
So, I pull into a gas station Saturday.
I left the car running with the A/C on while feeding the Shark some 92 octane, the guy at the pump behind me says "hey, does that have a V8 in it?".
I reply "yeah"
Then he says "I didn't think it sounded like a Porsh, sounds good though".
I said thanks...

('85, full stock exhaust with all emissions).

Yeah, I am running a Flowmaster series 50 2 in 2 out resonator/muffler. It doesn't do much muffling. It is downright loud. I was at a local restaurant on one occasion parking when a fellow says "that's gotta be a big block Chevy". I said it was a SOHC Porsche V-8 and he just walked away generally acting like I was trying to put one over on him. Another time, a few days later, same place, another couple of guys are walking by and one says "you need a tune up". I need to find a better restaurant, or one with more refined clientele.

This guy just lives in my neck of the woods so thought I'd share.

I had a guy say my 911 sounded "like ****" once. He drove a rusty Isuzu.

He was this jerk neighbor of the house i was renovating to flip.

I've had a few people wonder if the engine is stock in my 81, when I tell them it is they usually gawk and look generally confused.

I've even been asked if the engine I have in it is a sbc. Same reaction when I tell them it's a 4.5 Porsche V8.

A lot of people just aren't familiar with our cars and say some ignorant things sometimes. It's our job to reeducate them

Rolling through downtown Chicago the other day, a guy walked up to me at the light and asked me if "that is an LS1?" I told him it was a Porsche 32v 5.0. He seemed very confused. 86.0 all stock

The 32 valve cars are. I'm not sure about the 16 valve cars though.

I believe the 16V engine would be considered a wedge design.



Notice how the combustion chamber is a wedge/triangle shape.

They called the 351 heads I used to have on a Mustang 302 block "closed-chamber" heads. I'd say it's the same thing just different terms though.

Yes, there are several terms used by manufacturers. But, terms like pentroof, wedge, bathtub, bowl and flat head designs, would be terms that would normally carry across all fields of knowledge when talking head design.

Sure manufacturers like to change the terms quite often, making them sound new, cooler and ground breaking for increased sales...but in the end...they all amount too about the same old terminology/technology (with minor changes).

Kind of like the term "4 wheel drive". You say your car is 4 wheel drive...and some one immediately pictures a red neck that's put a car body on a truck chassis...but you say your car is "all wheel drive"...now that sounds very sofisitcated...and appeals to the masses...lol

Confuse folks even more when you describe your Porsche Big-Block Hemi V8. Chrysler has a trademark on the term "hemi" when it comes to car and truck engines, even though the heads they use are a little too squished down to be a true hemi. First patents on the hemispherical combustion chamber were assigned to Daimler more than a century ago, by their chief engineer at that time. That guy eventually had a luxury car series named after him, but produced by Mercede-Benz. Without using a search engine, who was that engineer?
