Default My first post as 928 owner

Hello all, my name is Wayne Lambright, Northern California. former BMW tech 4 years. Than seven years sales BMW, LandRover and Porsche. Newport Beach and Marin, California.

I have lots of automotive repair experience.

I did some reading, I have to replace some syncros in a 928 1985 gearbox. Will I need a press? Is 10 being expert. 5 do at home. is this a 7?

I hope to give back to the group the story of this repair. I'll take photos with my nice Nikon D2h 50MM. My goal is to run a Porsche restoration center for 928 only here in Guerneville. I have 11 acres of land and majestic redwood trees every photo looks like a professional magazine shot. People come here on weekends to see it so why not build a repair center in the middle of it. That's my goal. I have two investors now and this is my first project. Maybe in two years I'll be there.

Thanks for help and consideration and if I can help you just let me know.

Sounds like an outstanding situation to be in Wayne, good luck! Beautiful area.

If you haven't found them previously, a good model to emulate for DIYs, unless you go to video or blog format is available. While other members have provided terrific accounts of individual products- we have the benefit of one owner that really went the extra mile in compiling job aids- a search for 928, dwaynes garage and Norcal ought to get you there.
Wait, Wayne isn't an alias, right?
J/K.

The scuttlebutt is or at least used to be that the 85 & later borg warner transmissions have pretty resilient internals and good synchros. Earlier 928 manual Porsche trans were notoriously poor in this regard. But mileage, fluid, history, and Mr. Murphy can all intervene to upend the scuttlebutt. I know of at least one '85 trans that had a flawed 2nd gear shift fork that got jammed on the sleeve...oh, wait, the flaw resided in the operator...Congrats on the new car, the new enterprise and welcome to another enthusiasts' community!s

Welcome to the tank, Wayne. I'm a couple months ahead of you in ownership, but this is a great place to be.

I'm pretty much like a tit on a bull when it comes to hard questions, but as was stated above - there are an an amazing set of minds here and years of experience that can help.

Being in a somewhat similar category as a soon-to-be shark owner myself (Yosimite Sam voice --> "abarren' accidents uh course"), just wanted to say welcome and all success with your new venture.

Welcome!
The "search" function at the top of the forum page is kinda sketchy at times, but searching Rennlist from Google seems to be more reliable, there's a URL in my sig below that works for me.
Cheers!

Hello fellow Rennlisters. I ended up passing on that car with this transmission issue, I might get it but not certain. I did get #73 1979 928 today.
