Ha! Maybe if it just meant pressing in an uprated bearing and seal. But IMHO with the labor required to make a significantly better pump, with larger bearings to handle the load, more robust idler pin, and all of the complex mounting bosses, I think it would end up costing at least a couple-three bills. Especially if produced in small quantities. But then, if it could outlast 4 or 5 or 10 timing belts, and be easily rebuilt by the end user, I would be happy to pay that.

If you have a WP with a Porsche part # on it is that a good thing or do part# come one other suppliers pumps. I have a rebuilt pump with a plastic impeller and part# 928 106 122 on it. Can the year be confirmed by the number for what year it is good for?

Hi.

Sorry to be confusing. I am saying that a larger bearing could be placed in the pump housing during the regular machining process. I would cost about $20 if they were being done in batches anyways.

Shortly after buying my 928, I had a respected 928/944 mechanic to a TBelt job on my car and asked that he replace the waterpump at the same time. I asked for "official Porsche NEW pump" and not a rebuilt. I also asked for a metal impeller. I assume that's what he put in and not something else. I do know that what he took out had a metal impeller.

Are you figuring in the fabrication of a larger shaft? Also, I don't have a water pump to look at without digging into my(running) car. How much bigger can you make the bearing pocket? I suppose a bearing with the same ID and larger OD could be spec'ed, but what I was thinking(again without looking at a WP) is to increase shaft & bearing size significantly, perhaps ~75%. I was assuming that such a change would require drilling out the boss and pressing/welding in a MUCH bigger boss.

I'd rather just remove the WP driving pulley from the timing belt system. It wouldn't be hard to do, but would definitely closer to H's $100 more WP than a $20 bearing upgrade.
