Is the torque tube still connected? Mount a heavy vise in the middle of a length of 2 x 10, and clamp the front TT shaft coupler in the vise. Put the transmission in 5th gear. Rent a 1" impact wrench and a 32 mm socket, and go to town. Or get a long 3/4" drive breaker bar and a 32 mm socket and have a friend counterhold a long steel bar between the wheel studs on the opposite hub.

Or am I fundamentally missing how the differential will (re)act in this situation?

get an air gun and put the 32 MM impact socket on it,
spray the nut with PB blaster first ,
the nut should come right off

Took me three hours.

Impact guns have not worked for me but I do have the huge ones.

I heat up the nut.

I have someone counter hold a bar that fits between the studs.

I take a 4 foot breaker bar on a large ratchet handle and pull. Sometimes I break the craftsman, and then I get it fixed or replaced. Sometimes I get the nut off the first time.

SG,
I have a 3/4" drive breaker bar and the appropriate socket. You would have to hold the studs. Just let me know. SHOULD be quick and easy.

The problem is the transmission is no longer there, he's suffering from floppy axle syndrome.

Borrow a transmission output axle flange from Roger (or Mark?), put three bolts through the axle one way, and three bolts through the flange the other way, bolted to something sturdy.

Then bust out the bigass breaker bar.

Why couldn't he put some bolts in the end of the half shaft and hold against them?

'Cause that's a way simpler and more elegant suggestion than my Rube Goldberg.

Why doesn't he just install the tire and hold the tire with the brakes while he loosens the nut?

'Cause the rear suspension is sitting on the ground all floppy-like.

The floppiness fixation is based on trying to see how to hold back a whole lot of torque with 2 CV joints that are going to want to twist on you unless they're more or less in line.

Mostly, though, I'm still trying to get my head around you not owning any air tools. They're the greatest thing since compressed air!
