installing Rogers GTS windshield rubber -cracked the glass-
#46
I've installed many of these with no breakage issues, you have to put them in VERY carefully, snug but not tight. It takes a bit of trimming to get it right. Each windshield is different too, some i've not been able to even put the factory ones in.
I feel for Rog on this as he's got a lot of stock.

I think that these strips should stay on his product offering. No sense to stop selling just because a few old windshields cracked. They just need to come with more of a disclaimer that some trimming and finesse is required. Granted, I thought I was well within the limitations of the glass, but here we are. If I had read this thread, I probably would have been even more careful.
Roger made a comment that soap and water might be required if they were a tight fit, but I honestly didn't know that these strips are known for potentially cracking windshields. I could have bought the Porsche part from any other online supplier and been in the same position. Someone who wants these strips will buy them, it only makes sense that Roger can at least be the one who educates the buyer as best as possible. After my experience, there's probably a few more risks worth mentioning. I don't fault him in the slightest bit! As I mentioned, my windshield was due for a replacement and I'm excited to have a crystal clear view while driving from now on. That first stone chip will have me more upset than this ordeal.
EDIT: Safelite just called and CANNOT find the glass. We will see what happens next. I think I'll have to source it myself. Anyone have a lead on BNIB antenna glass? Sigh...
Edit 2: I found glass in germany through Porsche Plano. They are having it shipped overseas and the part is $1383.81 incl tax. Installation will probably be ~$150-200, so $1600 out the door. I'm a diamond member with Progressive Insurance, not sure if that makes a difference, but a Senior Claims Rep is going to be giving me a call in the next few days. I don't expect to pay more than my deductible of $500. They should cover the difference, per my policy agreement for specialty and hard to find parts.

My usual windshield guy, who we've been using for forever, has disappeared. Seems that he might have been deported. LOL. Can't find any local shops who will order it and they sure won't install the Chinese glass as I've used a few times. One said he would only use Porsche glass and gave a crazy $$ number. Bummer.

Don't any of you guys ever read the directions on the box, or the warning labels?
IT ALWAYS SAYS DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!!!!
I get my windshield replaced at Sharktoberfest, by Marks glass guy. Great price, and no problems!!!!!! Some things are better left to the pros.

Update:
Progressive Insurance is going to take care of the entire cost for this repair, minus deductible. I will send them Roger's invoice which includes the cost of OEM Porsche GTS trim strips, Porsche genuine glass, and shipping to Safelite. Safelite will charge a $150 install fee, which will also be sent to Progressive. Not a bad deal at all.
