Default Speed GT World Challenge race results at Laguna Seca. (2) 928s racing!!

Laguna Seca Speed World Challenge GT was this weekend. Both Mark Anderson
were there again for another beautiful, action packed weekend.

Both Mark and I ran some really fast times in the first practice on
friday. By qualifying, we both spun those times again, and were then
waiting for the race. However, Mark Anderson has quite a mechanical
problem story for you that Ill let him share in his recap.

Anyway 26 cars signed up, 24 cars on grid, and Im qualified 22 with a time
of 1:41.9.(previous best was 1:42.5). SO, im pretty happy with that time
and just ahead of the GMG 2002 M3 BMW race car and a Supercharged Mustang.
carol in the Mustang and I had times that were close, but the bmw was much
slower.

The start: the Saleen SR1 stalls and people scatter a bit, and I get
rail roaded by the bmw and the mustang. I pass the mustang on the outside
of turn 4 and then reel the BMW in and pass him down the main straight.
Later, a couple of cars get tangled, there is a full course caution. I
hustle up for 2 laps to catch the leaders. Un eventful restart, I lap the
BMW for the second time, and Im approaching carol to lap again carol in
the supercharged mustang and we almost get tangled as this SR1 Saleen that
has been off track, has just passed me and we are going into turn 11, 3
wide. The saleen starts to spin again, and carol lifts, I wip around on
the inside and bang the transmission to 1st, and rocket from 5k to rev
limiter(first time) and now am behind the Saleen. Im lapping the Mustang
for the second time and needed to get a head of Carol as the very fast ZO6
speed GT vets a couple of turns ahead are starting to slow.
White Flag lap: I look behind, and its my old friend Paul Mumford whom
Ive race with several years ago in some TCRA club events. He is in the
lead and looking mean. (go to the speed World challenge website for a
picture of a new viper Comp Coupe!!) he is ahead of Auberlin and Pobst in
the Audi TT4.2liter. I point him by at turn 4 and the PTG BMW at turn 6
and keep close to turn 11. the end!! Turned a 1:40.8 in the race, nearly
2 seconds off my best time. Mark was around 1:36.xx , so I was quite
happy to be able to hang within 4 seconds or so of many of the mid pack
runners! actually, most got slower toward the end of the 28 lap race, and
I actually ran my fastest time at lap 17!! Oh well, someday Ill get some
HP. TOM, WHERE IS MY INTAKE!!!

Did some subtle corner balancing over the weekend, using some
professional scales with the Speed World challenge officials. cross
weights went from 180lbs off to 50lbs off. front to back weights are
55%/45% and the total weight was 3050lbs with a half a tank and me in the
car.

We were using the R compound Toyo RA1s, same as at Sears point, and they
were absolutey amazing. I was using the same set I used at Sears, and
were sold to me with 2 days use on them previously. (thats 16 heat
cycles!)
They come shaved and still have tread and stick for the PCA National event
(US Sports car Championships) at laguna in October. (don and I will be
there) For all practical purposes, the Toyos are just as fast as
Hoosiers, and the only draw back, is that the toyos weigh 5lbs heavier a
tire!! thats 20 rolling lbs, or effectively 40lbs if it was in the car!

All in all it was a great weekend. the car ran flawlessly, not a miss,
hickup, worn part, smoke, leak or anything. drove the car there and home
again. The anouncers mentioned this several times over the PA system!!

Many thanks to all that lended a hand. Bill, thanks for carrying the
flag, and Scot Graham's Dad for bringing me to and from the track all
three days!! (as well as other support for the weekend efforts) Mark
Anderson, as always took good care of keeping a neat and spacious home
base with his trailer, and took care of the Lodging. (no, we didnt sleep
in the trailer!) We didnt share any used tires or sandwitches, but we
clearly were the least funded teams out there. Even the 2 teams I beat,
had semi tracker trailers with teams of mechanics, pit help and tons of
money!!! other than gas and food and a set of Paget brake pads, there
really were not many expenses.

Ill let Mark share his weekend recap. wait til you hear what happened 15
min before qualifying!!!!

Thumbs up

Congrats on that lap time, Mark!! Sounds like you had a lot of fun out there. I, for one, am quite pleased to see your continued representation of the 928 in the Speed World Challenge GT events. D
ONE MORE YEAR....AT LEAST!

Congrats Mark. I wish I could have been there to see the race, but I'll catch it on TV next week for sure. A 1:40 at Laguna on RA-1's? That's just amazing. I certainly appreciate just how quick that really is.
