Default Do you carry spare relays?

Alan's great thread on the CEP led me to buy some spare fuses and a fuse puller today. Do any of you also carry extra relays on road trips? If so, which ones?

Thanks!

I have several 53B relays (horn, fuel pump, EZF, etc). They're actually old, and were working, but I replaced them trying to diagnose a no-start. I figure one of them might help in a pinch. Probably better off having new spares, but I haven't bought any new ones that I didn't end up using.

I'll pack two- and three-headed jumpers. That's 2" of wire with square spade lug crimped on each end. Sometimes a three-header (like an "M") is needed.

Ya gotta remove it when not needed but it's 100% when it's in. There's no "is that relay bad, too?!" The connection diagram is on the side of the relay and the power connection is almost always the two wide ones.

A couple 53s, a fuse kit, jumper wires (2 & 3 way as described above) and a test light.

Are there instructions on how to make, and use, these two styles of jumpers? I searched but didn't find any.

Thanks for the responses to date and thanks in advance on this one!

One 53B relay and a fused jumper, a mini voltmeter & probes and a bunch of fuses. If that won't do it then the AAA card comes out (it never has yet though).

I do carry a tire inflator and a tire plug kit. I also have a spare battery bolted to the car (that so far has never been used in anger) + stock tools & spare and that's it. You can easily go overboard!

Like this - simple - get a heavy gauge fuse-holder 12AWG or even 10AWG (BTW - I don't know what this 'other' type is for - you only need one)

Usage: check the circuit - select the right fuse rating. Plug one blade terminal in the 87 (or occasionally 87a) slot of the relay socket (relay removed) - then plug the other blade terminal in the 30 slot (use this sequence). You can use the fuse like a switch, pull the fuse for off.

I carry 3 headlight relays, 2 fuel pump relays, a few 53's, a couple of the 5 pin ones, and some others. Basically enough to fill 2 relay panels in a 928. I also carry a fuel pump, a timing belt, a Porsche 9131 tool ( original Kempf).

Its my Murphy's law kit

I just carry a couple of type 53 relays and a few spare fuses in the glovebox of my 928s. Anything more serious than that I'll just call my breakdown service.

I have used one of the relays before - noticed one day that I could still hear the fuel pump in my 87 after I got out the car. One leg of the original relay had come loose and shorted inside the housing.
