Seen on CL while on vacation in Hawaii

Not sure if it makes sense to ship a car to the mainland but if anyone wants me to go out and take a look at it I'd like an excuse to do so.

I would not be too worried about rust issues. Neither my S4 or my GTS have any rust issues at all. The S4 has been here its whole life and the GTS has been here a long time. Also, this car is on the westside. If it were on the windward side that would be a whole different thing. The salt air blows with the trade winds onto the windward side, but once it makes it over the mountains it is not that bad. Kapolei is a new community, though so its pretty sure the car has not been there since '78. Would be important to find out where it has been.
This car has been on CL for a few months and the price has slowly rolled down a few hundred bucks at a time, just due to no demand. The issues are:
-There is nobody here that can work on them, except perhaps me.
-People here like new things. They don't go for vintage.
-There is only about 5 miles of road where you could open up a 928.
-80mph is reckless driving here.
-The 928 model is not well known.
-This car needs interior work.
-'Major tuneup needed' means CIS work and plug wires, both of which can be expensive, especially if you don't know what you are doing.
-Parking spaces are narrow here and 928 doors are long
-Back registration costs are an issue. Its $200-$300 per year and what ever accumulated costs would have to be paid. You cannot even pay it unless the car passes the 'Safety test', which means it has to be running well and all lights working etc.
-Shipping from Honolulu to LA is not too bad. Under $1000, I think. If shipping Matson, registration has to be current, which means any back fees have to be paid.

I've got a buddy in Kihei and he keeps sending me links to 928's in Hawaii as he really wants one. He used to see them at my fathers place all the time and has fond memories.
Forgot you were there Karl, if he finds one he really likes I'll have to introduce you two.

Hi Sean
I'm in Honolulu. What is your buddy after? If an OB, this might be a reasonable choice. If he had you to guide him it should be no problem to get it running right. If he is thinking more S4, I have an '88 that I am being pressured to get rid of.

If you can ship it and NOT pay the fees then ok but after.... and if does not live near a port then it is not really worth it and might as well buy from mainland which you dont need to pay the back fees before shipping out of state.
But eh, it sounds like it is at least running according to that post.

eaten cars
Having lived on Oahu for most of my life (Kaaawa) I watched my 77 F150 get eaten away from salt. Same for the Nissan Titan. Back dues, electronic components, plus safety check equal dangerous buy. Plus the H3 is your only option to open it up and sheez, all your talking about is looking cool as you drive to the golf course. That's if your AC works.

Yeah Ranger, I have a weekend place in Punalu'u, so I know what you mean about Ka'a'awa. Nothing survives there. Not steel, not aluminum, not wood, not plastic, not paint. Its like the ANSI salt spray test every day. But that's not town or the west side. My 944 ('91, been on oahu its whole life) did not have rust issues until my water pump went out on that side. Stupidly I parked it at my Punalu'u place for a month while I got around to getting it done. Now the doors and rear deck have rust. Normally I just take my Explorer out there and never my P cars.

If anyone is really interested in that car.. You can ship to mainland using ADP Towing it's $1150 to San Diego, and no need to have the car registered. I use them when I buy from Copart. www..adptowinghawaii.com. (808) 495-0095

Well Allloooooha!
I'll be in Kapolei (southwest-ish corner of Oahu) this Friday and might take a look just so I can chalk up a viewing of one more 928- that is, other than mine or Karl's.
Throwing in my .02 as a new 928 owner in Hawaii and another 928 owner & rennlister here on Oahu- Karl is totally right about salt. I've been living amidst the central Oahu plains (Wahiawa) for almost 10 years now and humidity, saltiness are basically non-existent. My car has rust, but that's from prior ownership (who I think lived in Hawaii Kai for a bit) and yes, a full strip, repair/replace, repaint needs to happen- target of $6k locally before any parts.
As for repairs & maintenance, I'm an apartment dweller and don't [yet] have my own dream garage with lifts and space for all kinds of spare parts so they will be there when I need them. Fortunately, USPS, Amazon, UPS, FedEx, eBay- in addition to our amazing 928 parts suppliers- all work quite well... IF the part your looking for is available.
In my first year of 928 ownership, I only needed a few things... fortunately, they were available. Now in my second year of ownership, I need a particular part and sure enough it is [officially] NLA (instrument cluster printed circuit film - 928 641 973 01). And so I've posted a WTB in the classified area and am hunting (like a shark?) eBay and elsewhere to see what I can scrounge up. Sure would be nice to scour some boneyards in the SF Bay Area right now!
Now... for maintenance beyond my physical capabilities- there are a few shops... ok, maybe 3- that could work on my 928. One in particular- MotorWerkes (Ward area)- has been awesome for me. Gerard definitely has the knowledge, skills and necessary experience. But I think it's safe to say the maintenance resources here are more focused on the 911s and mid-engine Porsches.
But to be truly honest, I really want to bring my (California origin) 928S back to California- which just so happens to be my legal home. The dream, of course, to strip it down to the bare and refurbish, repair, reassemble. (A guy can dream, right?)
So... a 928 on the islands? Seriously, only if you can afford it both in time and money. If you have to get it up and running first, have an backup vehicle handy. So far, the best time I've found for driving it is between 10PM and 4AM when I can run the west end of H1 to H3 and back without any real interruption.
And just in case... a 928 on any other islands? Ooooh, I would say you'll definitely need the time, money, and have your own mechanical/maintenance/repair resources. Last I checked, we don't have any ferries so if you have to send it somewhere, that means shipping it.
still... it sure would be nice to have an on-island 928 group someday... ;-)
