Default 2R GTS conrods

im just rebuilding my GTS motor after it finally gave in after 9 years of racing.
it had 1r rods and i am putting in some new 2r ones. i have a lot of them in stock for some reason and noticed some have 8n on them and seem to have a straight fit little end bearing. some have w10 and the bearings look offset in the rod (all 2r rods tho). has anyone came across this? ill post pics later, got to start work now! thanks mark

Mark,

Cannot help you with your query but if you do not mind me asking, given your track exploits, do you perceive any weakness with the 1R rods? I have no doubt the 2R rods are superior but my interest is whether 1R rods carry any risk. Did your motor give in because of any inherent weakness in the 1R rods or was it more general tiredness/weakness in the bearing material?

I reckon track work exposes inherent weaknesses much quicker than road use.

hi fred

think the bearings just wore out. the bores are scored so im putting liners in, i noticed the bores where scored a few years ago, but left alone as it used little oil. its done nine seasons including 12 or 13 hour races at spa 8 of which we won, where its over 6k in fifth for a while, so its had plenty of action! the rods are fine but i heard the 2r's are superior so im swapping to those. i guess my rods werent a weak point as the engine is standard bar for ported and polished heads, equal length exhaust manifolds/stainless system and a big engine oil cooler. maybe the turbo/super charged boys find the weaknesses with these rods?.
regards mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the feed back - no doubt the later rods are stronger and doubtless Porsche changed them for a reason. I have a set of the original rods and pistons that came from the original GTS motor that was TBF'd prior to my purchase of the detrius. I keep toying with the idea of going back to a motor with the GTS spec so good to hear from a hard charger like yourself.

Hope to meet up with you one of these days at one of your outings- in the mean time good luck with your quest.

Rgds

Fred
