Over my ownership (>15 years) I have only been stranded twice - both times due to a total battery failure. Phoenix temps are very hard on batteries and when they go there is usually no warning: one moment quite OK - then suddenly (after a shutdown) totally dead, so for me it's a logical backup system. I've actually had 4 total battery failures - so its worse... but 2 happened overnight in my own garage - guess I was "lucky" (?).
I had/have a very similar backup system on my Ford Expedition/Explorer too - same reason (except I might typically be much further from home & help) with those. There I also have a tire repair system & compressor for similar 'get you home' reasons. The desert in the middle of summer is not a great place to get stranded for any reason.

I have headed in the opposite direction with my 90 GT
As a proper outlaw, it's mission is simplicity, functionality and lightness.
Therefore; gone are the headlight washers, rub rails, rear wiper, hatch release, stereo, amps, speakers, rear seats and belts, AC & heat controls (replaced with simple pull cables), air flap system, bumper supports and hydraulics, airbags…
(in fact the entire dashboard and anti submarine pads were replaced with a custom & well fitted carbon fiber unit weighing less than two pounds. The air pump fell off and the x-pipe compliments the deletion concept.
The spare tire was replaced with a can of fix-a-flat and the tools are whittled down to 8,10,12,&13mm wrenches plus a couple of screwdrivers.
Quite a few other items were deleted and now I'm looking for lightweight lightbulbs… ;-)
