Default Jacking Inserts, why oval instead of round?

I have been having some thoughts on the car's jacking points.

Were the original jacking inserts made oval instead of round spigots, so that originally (before rust set in and any repairs) the oval connectors could be locked into place by being turned 90 degrees?

Sorry if this question has been asked before.
