Car has sat for a long time now when I went to move the car after major motor work clutch had no effect. I can see the clutch plates are not touching. I removed the slave and it still starts in gear I can only assume it is binding on the guide tube. It has headers and removing the lower bell housing will become a chore. Has anyone with headers been able to remove the lbh by just removing the passenger header?

how are you confirming the clutch plates are not touching with the bell housing in place?
I had this issue with my 79 when I got it. Clutch disc's were stuck to the flywheel. I had to pull the bell housing, use a ratchet strap to pull the release arm all the way back and then slowly rotate the engine and use a plastic door panel removal tool to gently pry the disc's from the flywheels.
See this post for other options.

You can look in the observation hole and see the the disks are separated. The guide tube and shaft must be rusted together unlike your issue. Now that the clutch stays engauged the fork can be removed to replace the bushing from the top bell housing. While in this condition no pressure is on it allowing it to be loose. Either way the lower bell housing must be removed and a rusty set of headers are my main concern on how easily they will come off. I am hoping that by just removing the passenger side header I can gain enough access to drop the LBH.
