about installing the valve seals.

I have taken a few of the seals off and am comparing installed height. The install tool i have been using is a 3/8 extension and a 11mm or 10mm socket, this holds the seal somewhat and when you apply pressure the pressure is forced on the outer steel sleeve of the seal, not the delicate rubber portion. So i think ive got my seal install tool.

I was trying to figure out a way to get the installed height correct and have been playing around with some nylon spacers that have a large enough hole for the seal to go through but are small enough so that the 11mm socket will bottom out on them. But when doing this i realised that the valve guides are tapered, ive used my tool and used no tool at all and get the same height, no doubt to the fact that they guides are tapered. This makes seal replacement quite easy.

I am curious if any of you other guys that have done this have tapered guides, I would assume yes anyone else care to chime in on this?

I remember speaking to Bill about this at sharktober fest and from what he said i was assuming this would be a bit of a pain. But so far, installing the seals i just pulled, they go on easily and with just some pressure applied, seam to seat fully. Height is also comperable to the originals not yet removed.

Here's a valve stem seal removal tool I made. I used a Wire EDM to cut the profile but a DIYer with a drill press and band saw could make the same thing. It's a 3/4" aluminum bar with a 10mm hole, the cutout then allows clearance for the seal and for the 'forks' to be bent back, that allows ot to fit over the seal. The sleeve then slides down and closes the forks, the bolt screwed into the other end has a sliding weight. It does work very well with no risk of dinging the lifter bores.

Paul - where did you find that sealey unit?

I had one stripped bolt and got it out by using an impact (manual) unit with the correct socket insert. This was the old fashioned kind that you hold and hit with a hammer. The advantage is that when you hit it, you seat the socket and twist it, just a bit, at the same time. As soon as I tried this, it came right out.
