Riding along in my 87 S4 in the left lane of a section of the road featuring two lanes taking us to the get on ramp.
I glance to my right as I'm passing the guy (we have 1,000 + feet to go before the ramp & left turn) .....and I see....
The idiot next to me look at the huge sign for I-75 South & a giant arrow pointing to his left .......
and He starts to cross the solid white line into my lane ....
without looking to see if anyone was there....no blinker ...nothing just point the nose of his Hertz rental SUV left !

I though maybe I've enough speed to get by him ....or he would notice but nooooo ... bang .... & I'm going sideways.

F-d the passenger side door & rear quarter panel.

I hope to get it repaired..... Have collector car insurance on it but have not met with the appraiser yet.

Anybody know of a shop in Florida that will know how to fix a Porsche or 928 ???...if anybody knows of one ... let me know.

Thanks,
Tom

Oh ****...

Large picture and that's one of the hardest places to repair a 928. Get a couple of estimates and do not let them total the car out. Sorry to see this.

That really sucks especially in that part of the car. You will have to find a good panel and have it rewelded in place.

But yes, DO NOT let them total the car.

I've been hit twice do to people not paying attention in SoCal, but it was just the fenders and front bumper. Even that cost a fortune to fix from the estimates I got from body shops.

I hope you can fix it and get it working like new again.

Gee, I feel bad typing this, but the former standard of a response on this site to a situation like this was "it will just buff out". Hope everything works out for you!

What a bummer, to get nailed by some @hole in a Stupid Useless Vehicle. and a rental too. Get a good lawyer and sue his ***** off. Make sure HE finds out how pricey these cars are to fix. If you'd been in a "Dumb4two" that soccer mom tank would have flattened you out.

Saddened to read about this- these sort of things are real "no win" situations in that the best outcome will be a repaired car that invariably will not be quite as good as it used to be and will probably take a lot of effort to get adequate redress.

Above all you will need a really competent survey to assess the actual damage. I suspect the main concerns must be the integrity of the lower B pillar [not designed for this kind of hit] and the rear suspension. The suspension can be replaced relatively easily but if the B pillar is damaged that is quite a tricky repair to get it aligned correctly. Let's hope luck is on your side and the damage is more cosmetic than structural but I must say it looks as though that thing gave you quite a whack.

Regards

Fred

Any damage to the front fender?

If not, make a few similar type dents in it with a hammer before you take it to the insurance adjuster.

That way you get the entire side of the car repainted for a good match.

terrible drivers in FL. Rt 19 up the west coast has the rep for worst accident rate in the USA. When you get out on the interstates here the FL guys REALLY hate it when you leave more than 50' open in front of you. Bunch of doofus brake jammers. By comparison LA freeway and LI expressway have much better drivers.

aside from the obvious body damage , the wheel took quite a impact , perhaps wheel bearing / suspension / alignment ?

that pop rivit will probably be the straw. Honestly it looks like the only way you will get an Insurance repair is with a quarter clip. The thing is,.. not many quarter clips are available.
buy the car back from the Ins claim, and buy another/same car, you'll have a new to you 928, and a parts car to boot. So sorry this happened, but it looks to be a total. Do your best to keep this car and purchase another one. Hope the best, keep us posted.

Thanks for all the input.

Have collector insurance with B - Jackson & under written by America Modern. Going to have them see what they can do for me & then let them go after the rental car giant vs me dealing with it.

The car moved to a good shop today ( Naples Hot Rod Engineering) .....they have experience with this type of thing and everything in between.

A few months ago at a car show saw a GT40 that was so nice I took a few pics of it.... I'll post an image of their work.

Hopefully I can save the 87....wish me luck.

Tom
