The fact it won't come off the splines is God's way of telling you that you are going to kill yourself with that huge, virtually impossible to balance, mass sitting on the tiny pad of that $9.95 floor jack.

yeah, cheap jack not ideal. I'll use something better. The unit is (even) more awkward and cumbersome than I first thought. One of the pictorial walkthroughs used a crappy jack so I thought it might be alright.

Got it. Must have been the penetrating oil and leaving it overnight because today it just separated with the greatest of ease. Thanks everyone for help. Couldn't have done it without this forum.

For anyone attempting this job; it is seriously heavy. I've removed and handled manual boxes before but I don't recall them being as face-shakingly heavy as this autobox.
