Driving my "new" 928 from Boston to Denver!
#17
Long trip, but if the car was taken care of, it will do great. These things are pretty reliable. I drove mine from SC to FL shortly after I got it on the road, and you will be amazed at how comfortable it is on long trips. You will get find some cool mountain roads on you way through western PA, and you should take the car on a good MT drive. I have to second the 2 cars in one. The 928 is very adaptable to what ever you through at it. Good luck, and keep us posted

I'll be watching your trip with interest too. Let me know when you get back to Denver. We can connect- have you joined the PCA? There's quite a few Colorado 928's in the Colorado chapter. I also frequent Cars and Coffee in Lafayette first Saturday of every month. Always a great Porsche turnout.
Safe travels!

Jonathan,
Congrats on your purchase. When you get back to Colorado, join the Rocky Mountain Sharks:

They're a great group of guys and they are full of information about 928s. That's where I met Stan (Mrmerlin), and the group was instrumental in helping me get my car in great running condition.

You will really get to learn a lot of your baby during this trip. I had the pleasure of driving my "new" 86 from Kansas to Chicago. Was a great trip and I learned of all the small things I needed to "fix." Godspeed!

Everyone is so friendly! Beware, I may take you up on the offers of help or just stop by to say hello!
MrMerlin - did you drive out to CO in your 928? Wheeeeee
I've been to the Coffee show in Lafayette a few times with my Fiat 850 Sedan and such - good fun. However, I work primarily weekends so I am rarely able to attend weekend events.
Today the title to the 928 came in the fedex, and the tires got delivered to my friend who will get them mounted once the car arrives in Philly. Now I await the shipper and plan my drive.
So far: Boston to Saratoga NY, to ??, to Pittsburg, then head west...
I will bring a friend's camera (mine now only takes black photos??) and catalog the trip.
I only currently have photos of the car from the advertisement, plus a couple closeups the owner sent me. The car is Prussian Blue metallic 33X. The interior code is (I think) LA, but the owner dyed the door panels to a tan color. It will come with the stock wheels instead of the twists in the photo.
I think it is bedtime!

You really should have Stan (MrMerlin) do a thorough inspection before you head out on a cross-country trip. You haven't mentioned who did your inspection, but it only counts if the inspector really knows 928s.
In any case, good luck and congrats.
Stan? What's up with those 911s? Is that color mandatory in Philly or something?

Yep ... definitely worth getting Stan give it the once over.

I drove a 78 Euro from Charleston, SC to Illinois right after I picked it up from bring shipped from Germany in 1987.
The car had a known leaky head gasket and the car made it all the way without any trouble at all.
As soon as I got the car home, the motor came out and the gasket was just about gone. The only thing thing keeping the coolant in the radiator was coolant stop gap.
I didn't know much about the 928 back then send I doubt I would make the trip today with the same car. Guess ignorance was bliss...

I live 45 minutes north of Saratoga, just off I-87. I have a dreadful personality, but I do have a lift in the back of my studio. We used to live in that building, so it has living quarters, too. Perhaps a professional photo could be arranged as well.
[This invitation extends to everyone here.]
The principle indy shop in the area is probably the R&D Automotive, aka Bavarian Rocket Science shop in Albany. Have not been there myself. There's another one I should get the name of.
Watkins Glen is roughly halfway between Saratoga and Pittsburgh - a very blue highway route. The NYS Thruway is attractive along the Mohawk Valley - no need to avoid it.
