Default At Cars and Coffee this morning, Corvette ZR-1 guru said he'd love to own a 928...

Went to Cars and Coffee this morning and overheard a fella who owns ZR-1 Corvettes say how he'd love a 928. Great cars, he wants one.

While we were looking at an s4, he said he thought they would be great with a V8 transplant from a small block Chevy, and he's been looking... Said he could get one for $3k. When I asked him what year, he thought a 1979

Not sure what was more interesting - the SBC swap, or a 928 which holds together for $3k. Good to see the admiration, nonetheless.

Well, a non-running car with a solid body and decent interior wouldn't be underpriced at $3k.

And the SBC swap had been done a bunch of times. Some are crap.

Some (like Tony's "Just Peachy") are abso-freaking-lutely amazing.

No. Just no. A SBC belongs under the hood of a Chevy or possibly a kit car. A 928 deserves a Porsche engine not the most generic of all engine swaps out there.

Normal SBC swaps are done too much. Since he owns a ZR1, he should put in the LT5 engine into a 928, I'd love to see that done one day.

I consider it the only modern Corvette engine, plus it is the only corvette engine to have more than one camshaft and 16 valves.

It is pretty cool to see people outside of our community interested in 928's too

An LT5 would actually be pretty interesting, especially w/ a modern 6 speed transmission.

And you are right, lots of love for the 928 from the outside

About 4 years ago I was seating at the red light with my beat up S4 and this brand new looking C6 Z06 pulled up next to me. He said he liked my 928 and they are cool cars and his buddy has one with a Chevy engine transplant. He wanted one but with a chevy engine.
When I talk to high performance chevy owners (Corvettes, Camaros,...), they love their engines so much that they would put it in anything, its the best engine ever made with endless HP mods. I think even if they had a Honda civic they would find a way to fit a chevy V8 in there.

That swap has been done already. The SBC is so popular because GM was and is ruled by accountants. They used similar parts on everything and didn't change the design for years. This makes the parts prices cheap and conversion kits easy to develop. There are better versions of pushrod V8s out there.

Making the motor cheaper HP/$ isn't a great leap forward. Maybe I would think differently if more than 5% or so of the conversions turned out well.

an sbc swap will end up costing a lot more than you think

too many loose ends especially if you want the model year appropriate engine management system to go with your LT5. its hard enough keeping the system running in the car it was designed for

take your Porsche and supercharge it. Then go look for sbc powered chevies (or Porsches with sbc swaps) to beat at the track.

I'll keep my 928 stock, don't need - or want more power than it delivers. It's nicely balanced, now.

As for the LT5, while considered one of the best Corvette engines built, it's complex, and a chore to replace some simple parts. But they have their faithful who would disagree

The old LT5 is cool, but very rare, expensive, and only makes 400hp. A $3000 LSx engine will make over 500hp very easily.

+1
This post is quickly deteriorating into a mirror image of posts from 5+ years ago. I don't know how reguritating old arguements, given the rash of hugely successful transplants, is very genuous. You can always reference past clinkers, but the lionshare of swaps being displayed here are reliable, and display great workmanship.
