Default Need help troubleshooting power mirrors (88 S4)

Hi,

My power mirrors stopped functioning last year, and I decided to purchase both a toggle switch, and the joystick. Once I installed these two, I was still without the power mirrors. I should have done some troubleshooting prior to ordering, but didn't do so at the time.

The power mirrors will work when I hit one of the three memory positions, but I never did program a seat and mirror position in to this feature.

I'm not very good with wiring diagrams, but in looking at the schematic for my car I noticed power is routed throught the number 12 fuse, which checks out ok.

I checked for 12v power at each of the pins that connects to the toggle switch, and joy stick, and am without power at any of them. In looking at the wiring diagram, I should have power to one of these, but don't.

Can anyone help me in determining where in the car the appropriate wiring harnesses are located to see where the problem lies?

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting?

Thanks.
John

Johan,

From the symptomology you describe, you may have an issue in the wiring to the switch. The next step would be to reference the wiring diagram and find the wire that goes to the switch from the controller (located under the driver's seat). Check the control unit for output voltage to the switch/joystick.

If voltage is present at the control unit, then the fault most likely is in the wiring. Don't forget to check the return path on the same circuit as well.

Sometimes you might experience a broken wire to the speakers, mirrors,
windows between the door and door jamb at/near, the plastic pass thru.
This will sometimes act as an intermittent problem.

Thanks Greg and John for the suggestions.

I'm trying to check the wiring from the harness that's just above the parcel shelf, from which 12V should run to the joystick (if I am reading the wiring diagram correctly.)

I have a new door check bracket I have been meaning to install for a year or so, perhaps now is a good time to install it and check all of the wiring.

Hey John,

You were correct, the wire was broken in the door.

I pulled the door panel after seeing I had 12V at the wiring harness for the manual mirror joystick, but I did not have 12V at the connnection to the joystick.

After removing a couple of yards of electrica tape, there were 3 wires that were at one time clipped and then soldered back together. The red wire that brings power to the Joystick and another black to brown wire were both broken just beyond the heat shrink tubing for the solder joint. I reckon the flux in the solder corroded the wire enough over the years for the connection to simply break.

I crimped the wires back together, re-applied another yard or two of electrical tape to the mass of wires, and am back in business.

Thanks again for your help.

John
