Default Timing belt re-adjustment

I had my timing belt replaced about 1,500 miles ago on my ’82 and I heard that I need to bring it in again to have the tensioner re-adjusted after been driving it between 500-1000 miles. Is this true or is there a recommended amount of miles after which you need to have the tensioner re-adjusted.

It's true....don't wait more than 2,000 miles after a belt replacement. You should then check the tension again every 15,000 miles just to be sure.

Thanks Big Dave. I guess it is time to bring it in.

Buy that $59 tension tool and do it yourself. Not too difficult and very satisfying!

What is the $59 tool you speak of? Might this work on the 944 as well, if so, let me know where one can purchase this thing. Thanks!

Cool Thom’s Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement Essentials

Hey SHARKY47,

I keep refining a document called: Thom’s Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement Essentials. I posted it to the new visitor's post at the top of the forum. There are several parts and prices lists, pictorial procedure links, etc. I even added Dave's price list.

The Kempf tool is available from any of the big 3 listed in that document. I do not know if it is calibrated for the 944. A big 3 technical guy might know.

HTH,

The last that I heard from Jay Kempf (developer of the gauge) was that it does not work on the four-cylinders.

Don't think it works for the 944's. I used to have one and people would always be renting and shipping them for about the cost of the 928 tool. The 944ers would love to have a tool like this I'm sure. As would I because I think a 944 could be back in my future.

Thom, I was not able to find your thread on “Thom’s Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement Essentials”, would you mind posting it to this thread?

Also, from Steve’s picture and the pictures I got with the instructions I get a general idea of where to place the tool but I don’t know if I should place it 2” or 5” from the cam. Is there a mark on the car or could someone give me an idea since I assume this makes quite a difference. Thanks.

PKS,

Looking at the directions for the Kempf tool. Position the tool in the 8th or 9th valley (between teeth) not in contact with the cam gear, e.g. see the bottom of the cam gear where the belt is last in contact with a tooth on the belt, position the tool in the 8th or 9th valley to the right.

Word is it's accurate when compared to the Porsche tool. I know it is consistent across years and manufacture batches. I compared my new one with a friends 2 yr old unit. Spot on!

The timing belt has been re-adjusted and due to all help it turned out to be quite an easy job. Thanks!
