Isn't a DIN sized radio going to require you to cut the console trim on your '79? Or would it be for a different 928?

If they did and you haven't noticed, it means they did a good job.

Roger -- You're a true merchant. (I mean that as a compliment.) You're selling these even though you believe: "That looks like anything BUT classic - and at that price many far better options including original." Your job is to provide what your customers want whether you think the should want it or not. That's the kind of person I want to do business with.

I just got in two of these for installs in an 89' GT and an 88 911 Targa. They are a nice outfit but the nav screen is really only for when you get lost, it's too small to use. My main complaint is that they only have speaker level outputs, no pre-amp for use with external amps. The sound quality is among the best and it's very simple to use.
Will I purchase one for personal use? I doubt it. I just don't think it's got the value for the money.

I thought I’d post a couple pictures to this thread for anyone who might search on it later.
I really dreaded this install because a PO did a hack-job before. Fortunately, the new radio comes with the connectors and plugs to repair it. I put the GPS antenna in the rear quarter panel by the “Porsche Alarm” sticker. The antenna looks big in the picture, but it’s really about an inch and a half wide. The microphone I put up near the sun visor and the USB/iPod port I put in the glove box. I thought about putting it in the ashtray but gave that idea up when I thought about the cords laying all around by the shifter.
As you can see, I had to remove a lot of PO carnage—to include a Lo Jack! But in fairness he did label everything so that made the job much easier.
Imho the sound is excellent and the menus are intuitive.
So anyway, there’s what it looks like in a 928.

That looks really good. How well does the screen (size and location) work for GPS?
Did you consider putting the USB ports into the center armrest? It would make it easy to stash your phone there & charge it while playing tunes.

I seriously considered mounting the USB/iPod port in the center console but I have a Paul Champagne cushy thing in there and I just couldn't bring myself to altering it. But with a stubby connector for a phone, it would be a great location.
I bought this as an IT refresh as my old radio was 15 years old and did nothing other than play CDs. I just paid the Porsche tax and went with this unit. Said another way, I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy this. I'm just showing that this is what it looks like in a 928.

I just installed the Classic Radio in my 95 GTS. My car had the original Alpine Cassette CD1 with the blaupunkt amp next to the passenger seat. I did not want to change any wiring so the only extra part I needed was the Classic Radio Alpine Bluapunkt adapater from Porsche ($29) and this $9 6 ft 8 pin din cable male male to hook to the adapter and run to the amp. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Din-8-Large-...-/232022350419 Saving the original radio for the next owner. It is very nice having a modern radio in the car. Kind of expensive but so is the original if you have to find one.

So, here is a new datum on radio technology. My Swiss friends updated me on the fact that in CH, the current plan seems to be the shutting off of all analog radios starting in 2020.
Here is a relevant article in German:

I am not sure what the schedule here is, but I am starting to wonder what I should do with my 91 GT. The current stereo install was rather a hack. BUt maybe going back to stock just isnt' worth the effort now.
It looks like the days of classic auto radios are really numbered. The cassette decks, if useable, are no longer really practical. And, if the radios don't work, it really marginalizes the deck then.
These classic options therefore might grow in importance! I hadn't really been following this topic of FM frequencies being turned off up to now....
