Default Transmission weight?

Does anyone know how much a transmission weighs for a 1979 928? I'm considering buying a complete used one and having it shipped as opposed to buying separate used gears that range in the $200 price each. The asking price is $300 for the complete used tranny, but I don't have a clue what shipping will cost. I feel this is a great price, but it is in Tennessee and I'm in Utah. Anyone know of a transmission any closer that's for sale? My problem is that I've either chipped my reverse gear or 1st gear and it's making a clicking noise. I won't know what's wrong until the mechanic opens it up. Thanks.

If the 928 is not your daily driver I would wait until you know what parts are needed before you spend $100-$200 (or whatever a Greyhound ticket costs for a transmission plus the fun of picking it up at the bus station...) on shipping.

I shipped my core to Greg Brown in Anaheim, CA through All Cargo Freight, 280LB, from Allentown PA, was $354 insured. That was the best rate I found, and that was for a complete auto trans, manual should be a lot lighter and cheaper to ship.

your clicking noise is NOT a chipped tooth but a misalignment of the gears as I recall it can be shimmed so that it does not hit the reverse idler gear. I have heard it on more than one transmission had a customer who shimed his to eliminate the interference. My old transmission clicked for years in first gear never got worse.....until something else killed the gearbox
Perhaps Greg Brown will comment on this if he is back in town....

I just shipped a 5-speed box to Greg and listed the weight as 185 pounds. No one complained that it was overweight.

I had a 5 spd shipped to me via UPS, dry it was just under the UPS max, 152 lbs as I recall, but it was bubble wrapped inside a double layer cardboard box. No smile from the UPS guy on delivery, but no damage either shipped East coast to West coast.

Thanks for all the info. I spoke with Bob yesterday and after hearing more about the symptoms and suspected causes I advised that he might be a few steps away from buying any parts. I suggested the next step would be draining the box and replacing the fluid with Redline MT-90 Manual Transmission and transaxle lubricant. I have had great success with this product in multiple 928 I have owned over the years.

I hope that the suggestions keep coming for murfthesurf13. Super nice guy that just wants to keep his smokin 928 in tip top shape.

Uship can be very economical for door to door.

I shipped a similar transmission 950 miles (SC to IA) via Southeastern Freight Lines with a terminal pickup. Weight was 165 lbs with a wooden pallet. Shipping cost of $180. I also have 2 more early transmissions for sale. One is recently rebuilt with LSD.

The price of replacement parts for these units is VERY expensive. Good idea to buy a complete spare.
