Default Wheel fitment help please/

I am wondering if these will work on my '87 928s4? The seller does not appear to know offsets and widths. I assume they came of a early Boxster or 996.

The price is good.

Tyre sizes are
Front: 205/50 R17

Rear: 255/40 R17

Any thoughts / suggestions?

Yes they will fit. ET55 fronts are workable on an S4, no spacers required, although higher offsets feel nicer to drive IMO.

I ran a set of those same 17" Boxster wheels on my old '87 S4.

The widths and offsets are right there on the front of the wheels by the valve stems. Width is on one side and offset on the other.

Why would you want to run a 205 front section on a 928 that is arguably inadequately tyred with a stock 225 section and lose 10mm of neutral scrub radius into the bargain?

I see little point in driving a performance car with under performing tires- just does not make much sense to me.

The stock S4 16 inch wheels are a better bet in my opinion- if you ask nicely some kind person may even give you a set given there is not a lot of demand for them.

There are plenty of sets of 18 inch Porsche wheels around, lousy offset but well capable of taking a 225 or wider front section- I guess it all comes down to available $$$'s..

Good luck whatever you decide- just remember you have 400+kg bouncing up and down on each wheel.

Rgds

Fred - thanks for pointing out the 205 width. I am sure when I saw this first, the size was 215. Or old age is really catching up with me.

Where I live, finding stuff like this within a few hundred kilometers make you look. Sourcing Toyos in the correct sizes can take time, so having a spare set of wheels make sense.

I agree with your view on the stock wheels, which is probably why I am the only one of my 928 friends on standard wheels.

Cheers

The obvious answer to this, is that the 205 width is stock boxster fitment, and thus likely what is on the rim. If its not worn/old, I see no significant issue for general road use just using that tyre.

On the set I fitted to my old 87, they needed new fronts anyway so I went to 225 section, but if the set he buys already has good 205's on, then may as well use them up.

On my current 87 I run stock S4 rims with 16" toyos. My 89 has GTS ET65 Cup II's with dunlop, although they're getting close to needing new rubber too.

Hilton, you answered my next question before I asked it. Fitting 225 on the front rims. Did that work for you?

I suppose I should ask: Does anyone have a set of RUF 17" in the correct offset for the 928 in the Brisbane area they don't want anymore?

Thanks for all the input. Decided on staying on the current standard 16" with Toyo tires and keep a lookout for a set that is more suited and to my taste.

Thanks to Bob Jane in Noosaville for tracking down a set for me.

It is always good to have a spare set of wheels on hand- you never know when you are going to hit your ultimate pot hole and take out the rim/tire combo. I once lost a rim half section on my fancy wheels to a pot hole, it took out the Michelin cup tire because I did not initially know it had gone. When I realised what had happened I then crawled home about 3km knowing the tire and half section were history. I the had to replace the half section that needed to ocme from the agent in the States and then purchase two new tires becuase of the differential wear.

I had a more or less immaculate set of S4 wheels that were no use to me because of the GTS brakes on my current 928 and was delighted to give them to a 928S4 owning friend in Dubai who ran stock 16's. The stock S4 wheels have the correct offset and are forged [I understand] so immensely strong- stronger than the GTS wheels[ they are cast].

If you do plump for those wheels at the very least make sure they are wide enough to take a 225 section safely.

Regards

Fred
