Default Full carpet sets on Ebay...any good??

I'm in the market for a full set of new carpet and I've seen these on Ebay a few times in the past. I'm dubious of buying this sort of item on ebay because return postage would be an issue if it were no good. But the price is good obviously, I'm interested if any Rennlisters in the US have purchased these and find the quality acceptable. Is this the same as the spectropile sets Paul Jager sells.

The alternatives are GAHH velour set for $1000+delivery, or custom cut through a trimmer (at god knows what price)

I have one of those sets in my car, they are okay as far as carpet goes but there are much better options out there.

If you had to choose again, would you have gone with a better option. I could afford sliverknit velour, but I'm all for a bargain.

If I had more money I would ave gone for better carpet and I would chose a different source such as Rob Budd as the kit required some trimming and the backing on the carpet was too thin.

Plus supporting the 928 community is a nice thing to do

When you tried to move the carpet to realign it, the fibers would pull through the backing very easily. So now my carpet has two 1 square inch bald spots on the floor.

The carpet that I replaced was much thicker and higher quality, but it was old and sun damaged so I needed to replace it as it started to get funky. The carpet I removed was also replacement carpet and not original as it was not silverknit.

Put a set of Silverknit from Rob Budd in my car and happy but any set will need some trimming. Make sure you specify RHD. Takes a few days to strip and put in new carpet.

Over the years since 2005, I've shipped over 150 911 and 928 carpet sets to Australia.
None have ever been returned.
Early on we had a few quirks with the right hand drive pattern but as 928 folk are the best customers to deal with, those were dealt with easily.

Only one choice for carpet - Rob Budd - I buy all my interior parts from him.
Great quality and service. He even has a choice of carpet types to suit all budgets.

I suspect there will be fitting and trimming with any carpet kit, but if I can do it, anyone can. I've been very happy with my kit from Rob Budd. Great customer service as well...apparently there are some variation in cars, e.g. the amp box cover...the original kit I received had a piece for a larger amp box, and when I asked about it, I had a piece that fit my car cut and shipped to me with zero problems.

This may be a dumb question, but why is fitting and trimming required on a kit that would have been engineered and fine tuned years ago. Is the OEM carpet pattern that hard to duplicate? On my old '88 300ZX Turbo I was able to get "New Old Stock" OEM carpet for the restoration which fit perfectly with no trimming, so I have never had to work with aftermarket carpet, but I will be installing some, almost certainly from Rob, later this year on the 928.

Not trying to be an ***, just trying to understand what are the limitations that keep the original pattern from being reproduced exactly. Is it that you are making a copy of a part instead of working from original dies? Sort of like a copy of a copy is never as clear as an original?

When I bought cocomats for my range rover they sent paper patterns to fit to my car. Marked them up and sent them back and received mats that fit perfectly.

I would think mats and a full carpeting kit that is glued down, covers edges, etc would be two very different thinks. My mats fit perfectly, yes....the carpet pieces require trimming and fitting. If nothing else, there would be a tremendous amount of work involved in cutting everything exactly like the factory pieces, with more possibilities of things not fitting a particular car. That might become prohibitively expensive.

I used to wonder the same thing, until I started working on all the glued carpet pieces in in Mark's GT- you wouldn't want a new carpet set to try to be one size fits all- you'd be able to get the set 'close', but say, for the light or the coin holder in the door panel, the openings have to be cut after the piece is installed. And getting a 3 foot-long piece of totally pre-cut carpet laid down on a piece so everything lined up perfectly would be a nightmare. Much better to have the fleixibility to do some minor trimming so the fit is matched to the individual piece.

That's why Rob Budd is a craftsman- every single piece he makes is effectively a custom one-off, despite each interior bit being theoretically mass produced.

Here's a new door carpet piece I cut out of a sheet of stock, using the original as a template. It took a lot of trimming and cutting to get the corners to wrap and lie flat:

Could this be made as a plug and play piece that would fit all pieces and allow the screw holes to line up? That would be challenging:

Its possible to make a kit that will fit without trimming.
To do it would require each piece be precision cut while its being made. IE door pieces, tool holder, rear bulkhead, amp cover, ebrake housing cover, kick panels (hole for hood latch, ECM mount) firewall (holes for gas pedal, console sides, etc.
It would add a lot of detail to the patterns and several hours to the production time which would increase the cost of the kit by a considerable margin.

The rear deck, all the floor pieces, center console section, and some others do not require any trimming. The ones that do require trimming are the pieces that get glued in place.
