What button did you use to replace the standard one on the 928?

The aftermarket mirrors (new ones anyway) come with the button to glue on.

I was browsing the current version of the Tequipment catalogue, and there's apparently an automatic dimming rearview mirror from Porsche which fits the 928.

993 731 982 00 interior mirror automatic dimmable.

Catalog says it fits 944, 928, and 911 up to '97. Dealer price list shows it for $217 list, and I can find it as cheap as $172.50.

Wonder if there's an option code for it on late 928s?

I was planning to upgrade the mirror in my 928 to an autodimming one eventually, but tonight, flipping the manual dim toggle, the mechanism in the mirror actually broke so now the mirror is floppy on the mount and I'll be doing that project sooner than I had antiicpated. Just ordered the Gentex Frameless with Homelink version from Amazon along with a V1 Mirror mount. I have a similar setup with my Escort in my truck and it's the most stable and useful way to mount the radar detector. Ed, thanks for the link and the Amazon price directive - saved about $50 and can use my Prime 2-day shipping.

Please check back in after you get it installed and tell us how it worked out for you.

I'm also interested in the V1 mirror mount; I almost pulled the trigger on getting one of those (off eBay) a short time ago, but never did. Probably need to do so soon.

I considered this but given the quite heavy weight of the V1 and the ease with which the mirror pivot moves - I decided to mount the V1 directly to the glass by modifying a second mirror mount and adapting it to one of the stock V1 adapters. Then once I dialled in the correct angle I superglued the pivot into place. It has been installed this way for about 10 years with no issues.

It lives slightly to the right of and behind my donnelley mirror (won't fit behind a stock mirror). This way no interference with visor or mirror movement, it does not protrude below the mirror sight line and the rear sensor has a view between the visor and the mirror. The display is not visible from the rear (or from the drivers seat) pretty stealthy. Perfect unless you need to be able to see the V1 - I don't because I have a remote display and remote audio control.

Default Gentex Frameless

I did the Gentex Frameless with auto-dimming & Homelink. Works great. Mounted the v1 to the mirror post.

For those of you who have made this upgrade, where did you draw power? Note, up thread Alan says that it should be switchable power -- meaning the dome light won't work.

Unscrew the fastening for the visor and remove the A-Pillar cover on the passenger side. Run wiring up the a pillar from the CE panel (use an add-a-fuse) - any X-Bus connection is good. Wrap the wire in cloth tape to avoid rattles. Run across under the headliner or better in the roof cavity across to the central roof light. I feed mine forward and out of the headliner just above the mirror. For some of the versions with map lights you need switched power and interior light power. You also need a connection to the reversing lights (auto dim is cancelled in reverse - think dark garage). Some models with a temp display need 2 wires for the (ext) temp sensor - so you may need a up to a 5 way cable - but all the wires (except map lights - local) can be very small.

I installed a secondary fuse panel for all the electrics upgrades. Tapped into a switchable wire from the OEM panel and connected that to an 80W SPDT relay that's powered by heavy gauge wire back to the battery and the panel has both constant and switched fused outputs. For the switched power, the relay energizes that half of the secondary panel when the ignition is switched on. The secondary panel powers the stereo system, radar detector, mirror, electric door locks, rear back-up camera, glove box and door lights that weren't originally on a '79, and some other stuff. I then made a custom fuse panel cover out of Corian that protects both.
