Default New addition: '79 Euro ----- not running

Well....I found it...and then bought it. I have been looking for an early car and this one will just have to do. I bought it from the original owner who originally purchased in Europe while in the military. He had it shipped over and converted in 1994.

It currently won't run. He drove it 1K miles in the last 15 years. The CIS system is presumed to be jacked up. Before he tried to sell it, he took it to a shop that did not know how to fix it. They did replace both fuel pumps and fuel filter but could not get it running.

When I got it home tonight, it would not run at all unless I sprayed starter fluid into the intake. After jumping the fuel pump and running the system for 30 minutes, removing the screen in the inlet of the fuel distributor, it will run about 3 to 5 seconds then dies. I don't have the kit to measure fuel pressure so I am kinda stuck at this point. I will take all ideas and give it a try. I have determined that the coil receiver on the dist cap is broken...but I believe it has enough contact to still get spark. I am pretty sure its a fuel problem.

It does not have a sunroof and has the black n white pascha

Nice car. Is the interior in good shape?

You're right to look at the CIS system. It clogs up quite easily. It might be running on just the cold start injector. I'd check motion of the air-door arm. Remove the air cleaner and work it up/down.

The "smart" way is to drain and clean the tank, replace the fuel pump and filter, rebuild the WUR and fuel distributor and replace the injectors. You're part way there.

Rebuilding the WUR is pretty easy. Just take it apart, clean the small orifices for the fuel regulation and put it back together. All carefully, of course. The fuel distributor is another issue. Lots of little parts and the diaphragm/seal through the middle may leak.

So... I'd rebuild the WUR and be sure the regulator arm is working freely. Otherwise keep pumping gas through it and see if it'll clean itself out. I'd put in some Seafoam to help that. If it starts to run it may take a while to get running adequately and then well.

Don't mess with the tuning adjustments to the system. The gunk can't be dealt with through tuning.

Correct. I just validated that the cold start injector is the only thing that is providing gas. I got it to normal operating temp by using two cans of starting fluid. It has backfired out of the intake a couple of times when it was actually running on its on without the starter fluid. I assume it was not getting enough fuel from just the cold start injector. Before my fuel test kit gets here I am going to remove the power to the external fuel pump so see if the pump in the tank is running....both to be brand new.

Any ideas from there?

I would look inside the tank and or under the tank and see if it has recently been removed to be cleaned.
the tank on this 82 I got was full of nasty gas and varnish

OMG!!!!!!!! I just knew something looked wrong with the fuel pump...so I started looking real close and its a Walbro GSL-394 Inline Fuel Pump that produces 190 Liters Per Hour (LPH) of fuel at 43.5 psi.

The old man I bought it from just paid a shop 2400 to replace two fuel pumps and other work. They charged him 850 for two Bosh fuel pumps and installed the one listed above. They are going to get a phone call tomorrow that will surely **** them off. I may also call the local new channel as this is ridicules.

I have confirmed that my 79 Euro only has one fuel pump. There is a strainer in the tank and no additional pump in the fender well. I assume this is normal....as I thought they had two.

At least I know that a piece of crap fuel pump that creates 45 PSI will not run a 75 PSI system.

I still can't believe this shop!!!!!!!!!! Fuel pump being ordered tomorrow.....and I kick my butt for not looking at it first thing yesterday when I pulled the cover off.

Installed correct fuel pump and still no start. CIS test kit should arrive today so I can start testing the system. I am determined to either get it running or nail down the exact issue before the weekend is over.
