Default My VIN is too short!!??

Need alitle help, please...
my VIN (according to the door sill, registration, and the windshield plate)
is
9289201346.
Too short??
Where is the rest of it?

It's a '79 Auto, is there a standard "Prefix" for the VIN on this MY?
I never noticed it before, but was trying to do a carfax on it...

Thanks,
-E

Older cars, before '81 abouts, had a different VIN format. If you request a CARDEX from Porsche they'll tell you it in standard format, or you can figure it out. However, your car is registered under the VIN you gave and carfax doesn't take those.

The VIN for a 79 is 928920xxxx. Carfax won't recognize it.
You could try rubbing the number with some Viagra!

WOW! You guys are fast.
I guess I'll give up :-(
I REALLY wanted to know more of the history of my car.
Any way to search for PO's with the number I have?

I have the same VIN problem with my '79. I my case, the PO is the original owner and I made friends with him.

Sometimes, people write their name inside the Maintenance book inside the glove compartment. You may be able to track it that way.

Also, look on repair work receipts for owners name and address.

Find out what shop has worked on the car and talk to the mechanics.

Good Luck,

Contact Porsche of North America for a "certificate of authenticity". Maybe open the hood and check about 2/3 of the way up the edge where the fender bolts to the lip of the engine bay on the pass side. On my car (1982) the vin # is there also. If you ever have your car on the lift you can cross reference the engine number and the trans number with the vin # to make sure that it is still' as it was from the factory (#'s matching). The "certificate of authenticity" will also provide you with these #'s.

Default BTW

The last 4 numbers tell you what number your car was in the production line. Since, my last four are 0857, yours is a bit newer than mine.

Enjoy the car and take good care of it.

All records on this car started with me- the only thing that was in the glove box was the rear view mirror!

Randy,

Joes was referring to our 78's. Think you still have the distinction of owning the oldest convertible.

Eric, There is a chance that a shop in your area has done work on your car. Some of the shops even have their records on computer. Doubt it though.

It is worth it to at least call a few shops.

I'm spoiled, my '79 has low miles and all the records.

Good Hunting.
