Default my engine rebuild thread questions

I figured Ithat would be easier to post all my questions in one thread.

Alrigt so the s4 block is split with the crankshaft out. What tools did you all use to move the Windsor key and the gear? Also what about the bearings for the crank. Some pulled off easy, I did not want to damage anything.

Which gear? The crank gear? There's no reason to remove the Woodruff key from the crank during a rebuild, unless one buggers it up while trying to needlessly remove it.

I assume you are talking about the front main timing belt gear that mounts to the crank.... why did you even split the case? I don't think there is a single documented case of a main bearing failure, unless we are talking automatics.

once you have the crank in hand and the pulleys are still attached, you should leave them until the entire engine is assembled again, and then use a puller to get the front gear off. (if I am understanding the situation correctly)

the bearings come right out of the block halves....... clean it all up and use the right adheasives (yamabond for example) to reassemble the block with the new main bearings, using assembly lube on the bearing and crank surfaces.

in general, its just much easier to leave the block together, yank out the pistons and replace rod bearings and rings and then reassemble, unless you suspect the engine is in bad shape and you want to clean out all the oil passages of the block.

It was an ebay short block engine. I did not want to worry about the bearing being bad. The block was very dirty looking when I purchased it. It looked the cylinder heads were pulled off of it and it was left in a warehouse for rats to live inside. I honestly thought I would find a dead rat or mouse when I took it apart.

Top pop the bearings off you need to push down with your thumbs on the side that doesn't have the notch/groove. How does the cylinder bores look?
