Shipping big parts
I had to ship a rear spoiler for a midyear car from Indiana to Charlotte.
Boxed, it was 48 X 48 X 4. That's a nasty size to ship.
Cost to ship: $51
How? Fastenal. Time? not sure, they won't guarantee, but we expect it will arrive at a Fastenal store I've chosen near the recipient by Monday or Tuesday. It shipped Wednesday morning from Elkhart.
Integrity? We will know soon if it arrives safe and intact, but I think it will. Pretty much a quick no-hassle process so far. Looks like the paperwork is essentially a store-to-store order, in this case Elkhart to Charlotte, with the shipper being the sales rep in Elkhart.
They ship at what appear to be very low rates (at least to a guy like me with no special fedex or ups account ), store to store, via their distribution trucks and system. Its a way to defer costs by using backhaul. I think its their own "3PL" service. They ship boxes or pallets.
Shipping a palletized 928 engine from Indiana to west coast, based on the simple rate sheets I have, is about $270. That's for a walk-in guy who doesn't have a business with a Fastenal account. They don't package, they are trying to do the hauling with no hassle.
Anybody else used their service? Any other ways to ship tranny, engine, seats?

http://www.busfreighter.com/ is a broker for greyhound. Shipped two seat boxes (under 36"H) for $68 total. This price is for GH terminal to terminal. Very convenient service.
I have another one for shipping transaxles, but the info is at home. Will follow up. Was recommended via a client of Greg Brown.
Happy new year!

I used uShip to send a 5 speed to Greg Brown for rebuild.
You solicit bids and accept the one you want from the nearest shipper.
I made a shipping crate for the gear box and delivered it to the shipping terminal, but round trip from Houston to Anaheim was less than $250.

Somewhat related: My MaxJax was shipped on Conway Freight. I had it delivered to my local lumber yard, they fork-lifted it onto one of their boom trucks, and the driver managed to set it down inside my garage onto a dolly. The yard charged their normal delivery fee ($30) and I gave the driver a twenty.

Figured I would weigh in on greyhound and recommend a word of caution. Had a fender shipped to me once and it was damaged in shipping. Filed a claim with them right away and they eventually agreed to pay for it even though it took about 3 months. I never received a check even though I contacted and spoke to numerous people afterwards with my claim number, dates, times etc. Eventually just give up after another of 3 months. Joe

I also used uShip to send four 16 inch dials from Houston to Conn.
No one could even come close to the price.
Maybe not as quick as the brand name shippers, but if you are not time critical it's the way to go.

48•48•4 box arrived in Charlotte today. Fastenal guys promptly called the intended recipient and when he arrived, loaded it into his vehicle. Cheap and easy, I'd recommend this to others.
