Default Strange headlight problem

Hi guys,

I own a 1980 928 S European model.
When I got home and turned off the lights, the main headlights had retracted BUT the lights (main beam) stayed on! The lights turned off only after pulling out the headlight rely. I opened the relay and saw some cracks and bad connections inside so I solder it carefully but it had no affect
The weird thing is that when I turn off the lights, while the main head lights retract, the lights are off. When they are fully retracted, the lights comes on again and light the skies.

I understand that there are 2 diodes in the headlight motor but from my understanding, they signal the relay when the headlights are fully up/down and since the headlights are not going into a loop, I assume that they are ok...or maybe I am mistaken?

Any ideas? its driving me crazy...

If the headlights go up and down correctly then it is not the diodes or the wiring or the motor - so it must be the relay - make sure you get the correct replacement - varies by year. S4+ are not compatible.

Thanks Alan! I will try to find the exact same relay.

Please let "us" know where you source the relay(s). My headlights have occasional psycho behavior despite multiple R&Rs of all mechanical assemblies.

928 International shows them on their site.
Roger's site is very sparse, you have to call or e-mail directly.

They aren't cheap.

Default SOLVED: headlight stays on after retract

Hi guys,

After troubleshooting this problem and understanding that the problem is within the headlight massive relay, I decided to try and simply replace the small electronic components instead of buying a new relay. I bought all the components (except the resistors) and started to replace them. I started with the 2 transistors (marked in red) since they were most likely went wrong and...SUCCESS!!!! After replacing both of them, the relay came back to life!!!

The component cost me ~2$ so it is a big save and a very easy job.

Hope it will help you if you encounter a similar problem.

The part numbers are written on the components. The transistor part # is: BC337 (write in google "BC337 transistor")
All the components are very basic and can be found in any electric components store. Since I am not from the US I cant recommend here for a shop...

2N3904 From Radio Shack should do it. It's a prettygeneric low-power NPN in this service as a relay driver.
