Default Before and after, cam gears

I finally found a set of steel cam gears for my 82. I am replacing a leaky water pump and my alloy gears are just about gone.

Anyway, the steel gears were sitting on a shelf in a storage shed for years and had a good bit of surface corrosion.

After a bit of cleaning up, masking and shooting with a high temp brake caliper paint, they don't look too bad.

Nothing you can do about future corrosion on the exposed teeth, but hopefully a turning belt will keep that from happening.

Looks good. What is to keep the paint from coming off (quickly) leaving shiny teeth exposed? Or, maybe, what did you do to keep the factory coating on the teeth when you cleaned them up?

I just did my TB/WP and should have replaced/re-coated my gears, but I didn't. Several shiny teeth. So I'm just asking out of not quite idle curiosity, since I expect to get back in and replace mine in the next few years.

I didn't paint the teeth area, just the faces. It involved a bunch of tedious masking. Mostly done to prevent further surface corrosion.

My alloy gears were badly worn with concave patterns in many of the gear teeth. Probably wear from improper belt tension.

I contemplated converting to round tooth gears but the cost was prohibitive changing out both cam gears and the oil pump and crank gear.

My oil and crank gear are steel and in good shape so I looked for steel cam replacements. Luckily I found a pair cheap near my house which will be installed this weekend with WP change.

Something I should have done last year when I had the engine out.

Ah - makes more sense. Thanks!
