Default does my car crank too long???

my 82 euro S mechanical injection always takes a good old crank on the starter before she starts from cold,maybe up to 5 seconds (not exactly a 1/4 turn). is that far too long and what are the possible causes ie do you think it could be a week fuel pump or dirty filter or am i looking in the wrong area?
once the car fires she runs great and starts first time every time once warm.
any ideas?????

Interesting to hear replies. I'm the same with my 78euro. When cold it's a good 4-5 seconds but when warm its 1-2. I have new wires/cap/rotor/plugs. How old are yours? Might want to look into that.

maybe its fuel related as in your check valve is leaking fuel back to the tank after shutdown and the extra cranking is actually the fuel pump trying to re-prime the fuel system. Next time after a long shutdown bridge the fuel pump to make it run for 2 or 3 seconds to prime the system. Then crank it and see if it starts in less time. A fuel gauge would be perfect for this diagnosis.

I always thought that about my GT. It takes several seconds to start, almost always.

For the OP you should have the running pressures checked first before swapping out parts.

these are the parts that fail the most frequently so,
you should consider replacing the fuel accumulator and the check valve in the fuel pump.

George the S4 and later need the crank to turn a revolution before the computer sets the ignition/ fuel into action,
it uses the timing ring and the cam timing sensor to figure out where the engine is

My 82 5 speed starts very quickly. 1-2 secs cold and immediately when warm. But it never gets too cold in Houston.

I have noticed if I prime the fuel pump for second or two before starting cold, the engine fires up as fast as warm.

But the fuel system is like new with new pump, filters, lines and WitchHunter refurbed injectors. I sure that helps a bit.

i think its sounds exactly like a check valve type problem; any ideas where it is ? and does anyone know which terminal numbers to bridge to run fuel pump

Mine does this as well. It always starts so I haven't bothered to rectify the situation.

worked out how to bridge the fuel pump and made it run for a few seconds before starting to prime the system but no change, still a good few seconds on the starter before she fires up;
BUT if i imediately turn the engine off it will then fire up straight away(engine still cold);
Definate lack of fuel and nothing to do with air ie aav etc. dont really know what to check next , anyone got any ideas? where are the fuel pump and filter and how much of a mission are they to change?

My 91 S4 (auto) takes 4 cycles to start; my 89 S4 (5 Speed), 2 cycles. Both assume battery has been on the maintainer or car driven a bit in prior days.

You definitely need a set of workshop manuals, sir - at least the CD version.
