When I was selling my high-mileage 944S2 a caller asked me what the last recorded mileage on the car was. When he found out I'd transferrred the title and had it smog checked with 170K on it, he was no longer interested. It doesn't take Columbo to figure out he was going to roll back the odo as far as he could, hopefully low enough to make the car worth a great deal more. It's mechanical and can be set to whatever mileage you want if you take it apart, I'm told. Another reason to look for good service records (if not smog checks) that indicate a pattern of mileage.

Carfax CAN be wrong.
I'm selling my Ford Mustang SVO on ebay right now and have discovered that the Department of motor vehicles botched the mileage when it was transferred from NY to ID. It had 44k miles on it at the time and they said it had 144k! I don't think the believed it was that low, and they didn't tell me what they entered, just printed a new title that said "EXEMPT" from odometer readings (because it was > 10 years old). Still wondering how much that is hurting my bid count.

Electronic odometers can be altered, don't let ANYONE tell you different. While not a rage here in terms of being well publicized, in europe, so many places offer to reprogram your odo it is amazing.. Certain shady characters have made a business of doing this..
And as for the carfax being able to tell you all the history, BAHLONEY. if the reprogram is done before the new registration, but less than the actual mileage driven by the previous owner, (only erasing some of the driven miles, not all) then it will not show up on carfax, as the mileage on the clock will show greater than the last registered mileage at change of title. Even worse when the sale is across state lines.....
The point is.. go out there, look, and ask a lot of questions. If you don't know what to look for, or what to ask, then get some one who knows, and have them do it... Caveat Emptor..

I bought my cuda through e bay the owner took off the fender tag before it was shipped...what a rip off! never again, I don't see I don't buy
I bought my 928s from a used car dealer in NJ, vito did not speak good english, he knew nothing about the car, it ran like $hit veto said " all it needs is to be driven" slipping tranny and vac leaks. I made him an offer ...
he sat on it for 3 more months then called.
The car was a little neglected but not molested. You can tell alot about a car
from it's appearance.....but not from a picture...and I just assume the seller is trying to rip me off and go from there

Aw man, that's easy. Just jack the rear of the car up, and run the car in reverse; make sure you have a full tank of gas though. Saw it on 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'.

On the 928 digital cluster, the odometer can be both read and reset to any milage with an electronic tool called an EEPROM programmmer.
A programming adapter will allow this to be done on the cluster's circuit board without desoldering and removing the EEPROM micro chip.
But it still requires some knowledge to understand how to decode and recode the EEPROM. An internet search will probably hit a few companies that specialize in this for the 928.
It's a shame to find so few cars being resold in really nice condition. Guess that's the reason they are being sold and not kept.

Even my smog guy commented that the readings this time were exactly the same as the last time he checked them. Easy to predict when he also noticed that less than 4k had been put on the car in the two intervening years. It's really kind of sad, since I replaced my "too dangerous to drive regularly" Lotus with what has turned into a "not home enough to drive it" 928.
I bought the car with really low miles (~22k) thinking I would run the wheels off it. At least there are still a lot of miles left in the car. I'm hoping I get to drive them out, rather than having my estate handing of an unused car to a new owner. Except for th efirst few years of my ownership, renatl cars have received the most miles from me.
I wonder if this car is doomed to be a garage queen. First owner drove it only a few times a year when he was home from overseas project work. Second owner (me) suffering from the same issues, except I don't have to travel as far to get out of town.
No need to tamper with the odometer on mine... Shows about 62k, or 40k added in my seven years of ownership. Time to do (another!) T-belt this spring. At least no other parts will need to be replaced...
