Hello, my 1989 S4 will start in park or neutral. When I put it in what ever gear it does what its told. However, once I shift it out of neutral and into drive or 2 and 3 it will not go past neutral so I can not put the car in park or reverse. the handle physically will not go back unless I turn the car off. Does any one know how to fix it?

Well, I'm just learning my first auto 928 myself...there isn't too much aside from the cable and its protective bellows, or maybe if the lock/hitch for the faceplate is in the way? Short of that, don't know whether a trans issue can produce these symptoms, the cables are known to bind but I thought that was mainly in the other direction.

jack up the car support it on jackstands,
have a helper work the shifter ,
look at the linkage at the trans,
you should find your answer

after the suggestion in post 4 is followed ,
we should have a an answer.
Usually either the bracket that anchors the cable housing gets loose, and or the aluminum outer portion like the pictures show snaps off and causes a bind.
There could also be other damage to the shifter selector but this should become obvious once the transmission is inspected
