Default 1988 Clock removal

Hi 928 gurus!

I am replacing the clock in my 1988 S4 with the same digital as stock (from Roger 928sRUS).

Side panels and under dash trays were removed from the center console. As with every piece of plastic holding this car together, broken bits are found. I will continue piecing these together with epoxy, fiberglass and washers.

Cigarette lighter connections were removed. Burnt out light bulb there. Can this be replaced with an LED?

Radio was successfully removed using the coat hanger technique, and connections unplugged. This will soon be replaced with a new head unit, amp and sub! Waiting for Hans' speakers!

The clock is between two plastic crossbars attached to the center console above and below the clock. There is the plastic facia attached to the console in front of the clock (facing the driver). The white insert that holds the clock itself seems to be floating in that position and I don't see any connectors holding it in position. When I try to wiggle the clock in its position, I can't seem to get the clock to pull out in the direction toward the engine, or move it side to side. Photos were taken from behind the clock, facing toward the rear of the car (looking for connectors or a way out)!

Whats the secret to get this out without breaking plastic ? I was hoping to do this without a complete center console removal....is it possible?

Thanks!
Brian

Sorry, Photos didn't transfer with first post. Burnt bulb on cigarette lighter harness. Is there an LED for this?

Broken plastic connector on center console. Near passenger seat.

Center console. Radio out. You can see the white clock carrier plastic. There is a black bar above and below. The facia facing the driver seems attached to the center console.

Photo taken behind the clock facing the driver. Looking for connectors holding it in place. What's holding this thing in? How to get it out!

It's a while since I've removed console, but you needn't take out the whole thing.

But I think you need to remove plastic around selector T as that's sandwiching in the clock.

You need to take that black trim piece that the clock is in, out. It is a pressed fit. Push the sides of the console outwards and pull the trim piece backwards and up. The clock should come out with it. I have rear AC, the controls for the rear AC keeps the clock mounted. HTH.

Looked at other posts. Decided to grasp the plastic facia surround around the clock. Pulling lightly from the front to the back, and pushing the raised outside edges of the console surround outward (towards the doors), the panel moves up and out. The clock falls out when the wires are still connected. The battery - post is disconnected.

The surround lifts out and away. Its only held in by peripheral pressure of the surround.

Switching out the wires the wires to the correct locations.

Make sure you use dioxin on every connection and make sure the contacts are clean and bright. Once together and wired, I reconnected the battery and, it works!. The surround goes back in the same way it came out (after a thorough cleaning). Its also a great time to make sure the boot surround is snapped down correctly. Ready to install the radio and ashtray (after changing the ashtray bulb with LED). I hope this helps!

Hi there,
Can anyone confirm it's the same procedure for a '89 full leather option car?
I tried it but no movement of the console surround, maybe I'm too gentle... ...

Thanks for any reaction!
Best regards
Alain
