Default Removal of the speaker covers on the door covers

There are two round covers on the speakers in each door. I know they get brittle, and wondering if anyone has a suggestion for getting them off without cracking the edge?

I'm thinking about using steam on the surround and then prying very gently with a inward radiused plastic tool. I would really like to get them off and replace my front speakers.

your new 88 right? should be threaded, just turn them off counter-clockwise. press on the ring only, not the grill.

They screw off on my 88. My 91 rears, popped off with a little prying. I'm not sure what year you have so, that would sorta help.

heat the edges with a hair drier,
then unscrew them,

Never thought of unscrew. My GT are popped on and off. I'll give that a try with a bit of warming.

Is unscrewing always the way to go on a '89 machine?
If yes I would like to know how many turns I have to do because I did at least 10 but nothing happens
I even used surgical like gloves to have better grip, but still no luck
I just guess... ... ... ... ... maybe because full leather option?
Thanks for your insights!
Best regards

If you push in the padded upholstery and go around the edge of the speaker the pry-off type have three or four small slots on the inner edge of the cover you use can use to pry them up.

Up until 1988 - screw off (wire mesh grille).
1989 on - pop off (perforated sheet metal grille).

Hi Tom, You are absolutely right, 3 slots and once you got them easy to remove the covers.
All speakers out for repair now... ...

It's been many years since I had mine (on a '90) off, but if you're dealing with the three tab ones, I remember using a paint can opener to feel around the perimeter, then when a tab is located, using the paint can opener (on one of the sides of the tab) to lift out/up that tab. Get a couple of them that way, and you're there.
