Some people put the K&N or other breather filters over those when they run a different intake setup, personally i think those are just as ugly (and overkill). Many times i think people design a different setup just because they can, they don't look at how the original system functioned and how it's perfect. It shouldn't be engineered any further. The tubes just slip off in 2 seconds and bam there's your space opened up. Keep it stock, don't reinvent the wheel. The differential pressure of the timing covers and the tubes creates a slight flow of air through the timing cover for better cooling, ideally increasing belt and bearing life. I would imagine the turbulence/whipping of air created by the pulleys and belt creates a slightly higher pressure in there, thus creating flow.

In addition to Matts point, your air charge temperature is going to be significantly higher...there is a reason Porsche added the "complexity" of the cold air intake. You are now taking hot engine compartment air and feeding it to the engine.

Cheers!

Driving without the intake tubes around British Columbia in light traffic in November is one thing. Driving in stop n go traffic when it's 90 degrees is another. Even with cold air intake tubes in place, the intake air temp in stop n go traffic gets real high, real fast.

I have a couple of sharktuner data logs from October 18, 2013 using the JDSPorsche Alpha N, which includes an air intake temp monitor. It was 83 degrees F in L.A. that day.

Here's one 9-minute datalog done just before SF13. X-axis is tenths of seconds in the datalog. The first graph shows the air temps (in °C), you can see how they bump up everytime I get to an intersection and have to sit, even for 30 to 45 seconds.

The second graph overlays the rpm (#s are divided by 100 so they fit on the same Y-axis). So this was a bunch of WOT runs up through third gear, you can see that every time I was beating on the car, the air temps dropped back towards baseline. The last minute or so would have been sitting at Greg's shop, you can see where the air temps ended up, with hot headers radiating up on the air filter housing.

So the problem you fixed by removing the factory-designed cold air intake system is that you didn't like how the engine looked when you had the hood up?

You should spray some deoxit in your ear

so, the moral of the story is,....... you should only care about temp at WOT, and with the tubes, it will be cool and without them and no WOT, who cares?

Fantastic. While yer at it, get rid of that pesky intake manifold. The engine bay will really be opened up then.

Dude - you must be growin' some awesome BC bud.

Do you really think to improve the car better than engineers (and also some specialist , here)and not to do something stupid in 10minutes(time to remove what you removed )?Oh, please....

the previous word, stupid , was used to describe your "improvement" ,not to insult you for free.nothing against you.
I just described what you did, in theory You insulted yourself removing hoses ad also writing here that you did it.

And maybe we were too harsh on him? Love the deoxit comment , but perhaps it would help to point out _why_ pulling the intake tubes is a bad idea?
