Question oil pan with strainer

Hi guys & girls,

I have a question regarding the strainer inside the oil pan.
Apparently from 84 onwards, there is no larger strainer anymore in the oil pan. It would make sense because the large strainer would prevent sludge from sinking to the bottom of the oil pan and thus will remain in the engine when oil is replaced, not ?

wouldn't it be better to have a strainer directly on the suction mouth of the oil pump, such as the later s4 models have ?
Here is a photo of the oil pan of my 1981 engine (M28/12)

wouldn't it be better to just remove the strainer?

the "strainer", pick up and the black "clover leaf" on the bottom is by far, a better set up that the later style. keeps oil in the sump under hard cornering, and that pickup work MUCH better. if you want to get ride of it, i will take it off your hands....

I don't know why people think this. The plastic part doesn't stop oil from sloshing and the actual pick-up is higher from the bottom. Once air gets under the plastic cloverleaf it will get sucked into the engine.

I switched to a later pick-up because it's closer to the bottom and has a screen. That and a full windage kit.

To the OP: The screen on the old cars is there to help block air from blowing on the oil. It may help separate oil out of foam, too. It's not going to really clean the oil or keep junk out of the engine. The chunks will go down the middle eventually.

What are you going for? I'd leave the screen in even if you go to a later pick-up. Skip the "GTS" sump cover as it's worthless.
