Smile Acceptable body flex when jacking?

Hello,
I jacked up my front end this weekend to access the fuel lines for replacement.
I used the factory front jack points with a set of JACKPOINT stands.
The JACKPOINT stands are super solid.

I opened the passenger door very briefly while on the stands and noticed it was slightly "off" when I closed it back gently.

After removing my soft fuel lines I put the 928 back down and the passenger door closes perfectly again.

The door andpanel gap looked exactly the same both on and off the stands.
Is this normal/OK/acceptable/horrible?

Thanks, experts!

Dan

I get the exact same thing when I get the car up on Liftbars and stands. I normally put the car up in the same place on the cement slab in my garage. I get the repeatable slight skew in the driver's door excursion every time. I guess it is a slight off level of the slab and/or the stand. It goes back to normal when it's on all fours.

I would not read too much into that. Some flex is expected. Now if the windshield had cracked...that would be bad.

Yes.
ABSOLUTELY do not lift the car without your crossmember on top tightly/normally attached.

[QUOTE=Dean_Fuller;11754079] Some flex is expected.

Sounds like a Porsche book title.

Yes normal, my '86 911 flexed much worse than my superior '83S btw.

I like to drive up on ramps when i can.

I place a mirror so i can see where the front wheels are from the driver's seat.

That is directly contrary to the WSM. When I lift the car and need to have the cross member off, I always remove it before lifting, per WSM instructions. I have never had a problem, over three separate sharks following this procedure. It is fine ( obviously) to lift the car with the cross member on, just don't remove it once it's in the air.

I have noticed the same thing, using a two post lift which is supported at the proper lift locations. Just a little flex and the door does not shut pure. I try to not open and close the door if possible while it is on the lift.

Ed,
I thought I remembered reading it in 928 Tech manual or something else 'official' that said risk of windshield injury. It did kind of make sense too.

Yes this is a normal effect of raising the car, whether it be one corner or all four points on a two post lift. The first time I also was concerned, but the doors always shut tight and solid once back on all four wheels.

I think the problem is that if you lift the car with the brace in place, and then take it off when the car is up, there will be a sudden, unstable flex that could cause the windshield to crack, and possibly other damage. Lifting with the bar removed, on the other hand, allows the system to flex in smaller increments as it goes up, in a more moderate and steady state. That's my guess as to why the manual provides as it does.
Here's the WSM reference: WSM 10-2 ..... " car must stand on its wheels when cross brace is removed or installed".

Does this also apply if the engine is taken out if the car?
