Kent. Sorry for the confusion. That's where the car was. Now she is in Winnipeg - that's where I am collecting her for the drive home.

Default Idea..

I was reading another thread about how the 928 gets little press from Pano (which is totally true). You might have a good story here to share. How are your editing skills take some good pics and notes along the way and we will be reading about it else were

Just a thought

The kid should be live tweeting the trip. I'd follow that.

My editing skills are pretty good. But I can't text and drive.

Maybe I can convince my son to do the story.

Why, do you have any pull with the editors?

Yeah, would make a good story. I'd also be interested to know the history of the car. Do you get back here often, sometimes, never?

It has the makings of a "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" sort of story, but you'll have to stop half-way and change the timing belt in the parking lot of a diner. OK, perhaps a little electrical stuff would be sufficient. "DeOxit and the Art of 928 Maintenance."

The theme of "Zen" was finding the relationship between the romantic and classical realms (meaning art and science, or the science of art). The author didn't find it and went mad. You could explore the relationship between the 911 and the 928, a similarly profound problem. Like "Zen", feel free to make stuff up. The author bio at the end of the article could note that you made it home, but were sent for counseling. You were sent home with a Prius, and doing well.

More seriously, I bought my Cayman on a fly-and-drive (CA to NY). It was a great adventure, but I had no concerns about a four-year-old car, and had no passenger. You, sir, have signed up for a real adventure.

A couple of thoughts:

Does the "special permit" registration have any sort of "temp plate" that hangs in the back window or something like that? The cops are used to those. Running with no plates at all, and nothing hanging in the window will attract some attention.

Your route looks good. Avoiding Chicago is a good thing. You might run a bit different in Illinois. Instead of taking 72 from Bloomington/Normal over to Champaign then south on 57, you can take 51 south from B/N. Take it down to 50 in Sandoval, then 50 east to 57. There's a couple of towns, and a good bit of 2 lane, but it's shorter enough that you save time. And besides, passing on a 2 lane in a 928 is both easy and fun.

Watch your speed. These cars go so fast so well that you can find yourself going well over posted without realizing it. At least you aren't going through Ohio. But you are going through Wisconsin. Interstates are posted 65. 75 will get you pulled over. 72 might. The cops use radar, laser and a nifty gadget called VASCAR to catch speeders (look it up if you haven't heard of it). Radar detectors are of limited use. The other states aren't quite as bad.

Have fun. These cars are made to do this. I took mine out to California and back in May. Amazing trip. Amazing car. You will find others who have done marathon trips in these cars and most agree that you can do 8, 10, 12 hours and still feel like you can do more.

When I picked up my wife's Cayenne in Sault St. Marie I didn't get 5 miles before I was pulled over (for not having any tags). I thought to myself it was going to be a long trip back to Winnipeg, but I wasn't pulled over again for the rest of the trip (but I also only saw one RCMP on the rest of the trip).

Cameron, it will be interesting to hear how you make out. Let me know if you need anything tomorrow.

I dont get to Winnipeg very often. I still have some family there but I get them to visit us in Florida. They usually dont mind coming in February for some reason.

The special permit appears in the front window passenger side i believe. Nothing in the back.

Watch for pics tomorrow.

An eventful day today. We arrived late last night and stayed with family. Met the sellers at the bank early this morning as agreed. Long story short, there was an issue with the ownership paperwork. Resolution - they had to make a trip out to Ontario where the car was last registered - to resolve. We agree to meet back at the bank later in the afternoon. More on that later.

So my son and I head over to the shop to see the car for the first time in person. The car was a bit shop dirty (dust on the outside) but otherwise as advertised. The only flaw that I can find is a bit of a mark on the drivers side seat side bolster. We take her for a test drive and confirm that she is ready to go. The car feels tight, brakes are strong, engine strong - all buttoned up and ready for the long drive home.

Head over for lunch with family. Enjoy a bit more of a visit and then back off to the bank. It's amazing how quick and easy everything is when the paperwork is in order. Sign over the docs, make payment and the car is now mine. We head over to obtain the temporary registration permit and insurance. Super easy - 15 minutes and on the way back to the garage to load the car and go.

Of course, the shop is on the other side of town. We get there at about 5 pm. Load the car and off we go. But now we are in Winnipeg rush out traffic and it takes us a while to get out of town.

We get the girl out on the highway and the as the sun sets a problem appears. There are no dash lights. Son pulls out the owners manual - the adjustment is on the left side under the dash. Try to adjust - nothing. Oh well I say to myself, maybe just a fuse. We'll look tomorrow. But then I say to myself, it must be something simple. So I try the little potentiometer again. This time as I touch / push it a bit - boom - dash lights are on. Woo Hoo!

The car is tight and a strong runner. Shifts are at redline. Really pleased. There was some construction on the highway south of winnipeg which slowed us a bit, but we pulled in to Emerson Customs and Border Patrol at about 7:30. Here is the odometer reading as we entered the US

Declare the car at the border. Again, very easy to do the paperwork and pay a couple hundred bucks import duty (2.5% of sales price approximately). And again on the way. That stop was maybe 20-25 minutes. Here she is at CPB in Emerson checking in to the USA.
