What am I missing here? $4k for a 230,0000 mile 928 with a cracked head? I saw it on CL last night - it's about 90 minutes from me - and I don't see the value.

So what is it worth then? And BTW, I still don't have one.... My brother lives in San Ramon, but he knows next to zero regarding anything auto related.

I don't know, that's why I commented. Maybe someone more in tune with S4 values can say. But 230k certainly isn't low mileage, and a cracked head is going to cost some dollars even if you do it yourself. Depending on the rest of the car it could be a really good project for someone, or it could be a parts car.

The head cracked for a reason. The other head is in the same shape, so that's two head jobs. Presume the bottom end is fine and the trans, brakes, and chassis are in decent shape.

$4k + materials - engine top; $3k, plus soft stuff on the top and front of the engine; $2k then consider labor if not a DIY and pretty soon you're talking real money.

Sorry, but it's basically a parts car now. Brakes bring some $$$, and other bits, as well, but the parts are more than the whole, as it were.

I have a 51k mile engine with porkensioner all ready for that car. Like I said wish it were closer. It is not always about profit, sometimes it's about saving it from being a parts car or worse.

Exactly.

The majority if 928 owners have far more into their car than it's currently worth. Using this mentality, most of us would have been better parting out our cars the day after we bought them.

I'll keep saying this over and over. Every 928 with a straight & clean chassis is worth saving. The cost to "rehabilitate" is irrelevant to me.

Most of you would have called my 79 a parts car if you saw it the day I picked it up. I was recently offered $13,200 for it, and I turned him away.

When i spoke the dealer he said the paint looks original and no evidence of any paint work. I can fix mechanicals but body work is beyond me.

I don't mean to be talking the car itself down. But at the price it's nothing to be excited about.

I'd low-ball him Richard Rawlings - style and get it for $2,500.... then call Mark up for another complete motor.

I wouldn't call that low balling it, a cylinder head is bloody expensive and who knows what type of damage is inside of the engine, you might have to just replace the entire engine if it is very bad.

The engine would make a great coffee table.
