Thinking of Switching to Automatic

Ive owned both and I must say, that city driving is a more pleasant experience in an Auto 928.
However... nothing beats the manual went you find yourself on a nice bit of twisty clear road... then I love the manual more than any car Ive ever owned!

I had a 91 GT before I got my current 91 S4, and had a love/hate relationship with that GT...
It was definitely super quick, and the manual does give you a sense of better control
However, the manual in the 928 is sub-optimal - long shifter travel, long pedal travel, requiring an odd seating position for someone my size, etc.
After a few weeks I had enough and wanted an automatic again, as I had before. Since then, I replaced the shifter with one that makes manual shifting of the automatic easier, and enjoy the best of both worlds.

+1 on MainePorsche comments. The car isn't about outright speed it is about how it carries speed. The auto drives really well and fits the GT brief. I have owned a Turbo and there is a piece of road where the 928 carries speed through the corners better than the turbo, it flows.

I want to head up, but not too sure if I can make it this year due to problems I need to take care of in San Bernardo, and if I make it I may or may not be driving the my Porsche

And likely I might end up with an entirely new car next year compared to last year

I really don't remember everyone from last year, the fest is too short

Get the auto, and when your getting onto the on ramp or find yourself on the open road, pretend that you are depressing the clutch with your left foot ( don't hit the brake pedal) downshift the auto into the lower gear and shift it like a manual. ( again don't hit the brake pedal in your enthusiasm).. also you might want to change out the T-bar for a faux looking shift **** and leather boot!!
The A trans really comes alive when you manually shift it.

I own a manual 944 and an auto 928. My wife has a 2000 996 with the shiftable auto. I live in Phoenix and traffic is not LA but has its moments. I have driven the 944 as a daily for 4 years and the 928 for a year. It seems more often I choose the 928. My wife...... Just told me she wants to start looking for a manual 996. Why? She wants more usable power.

It's a Porsche thiang. Old Hondas (80s) shift 10X better (with some miles on them) when compared to old Porsches
but the Porsche box had to cope with more torque.
This was true for old Ferraris too, balky shifts but wonderful cars.
911s of the same period shift much worse. My 928 ('83S) with slow 2-3 synchs shifts way better than the air cooled 911s i've owned with 915 boxes.
With these air cooled 911s your feet are offset way the the left (in US Ken) and talk about shifter travel and lousy engagement.
So for me it's all relative.. because after all those years of driving the 911, i really enjoy my 928 for it's precise (by comparison) shift linkage.
It really is a better shifting car between the two. 911s got the G50 box in '87, which shifted quickly (not quicker than a 928) but the G50 made A Lot of internal noise. My Brother sold his beautiful '88 diamond blue metallic (anniversary edition because of this. Sounded like a hardware store shaking..
As Ken says, people put up with 928 manuals because the rest of the car is so great.
I find mine very enjoyable but for Serious track use it will need to visit Greg Brown.

Well driving home from Sharktoberfest I hit traffic (dunno who else I saw on the road on the way back that was in a silver 928, but Hi~), not very fun to end the day from what could had been a fun return trip.
I should have stayed for the dinner like last year 2013, that return trip was pretty much me cruising down the freeway with no traffic to worry about.
Well I will plan to get an manual in the future likely track (but with some interior, I like comfort and less noise), just at this moment in time an auto for my daily commute is ideal, and I am tired of driving a beater toyota (I rather have an auto 928).
Plus the current 928 is pretty original stuff in it same with the paint and sport seats etc, it even has the labels still on the door side. So it is better for restoration, not to nutter the car to make changes that I fancy, (OB seats that has no motors, double dinn radio, color changes of both body and interior, sun roof delete, pretty much every part of the interior will be changed.... yea kinda goes against my modification morals when there are tons of other 928 which is more perfect to mod)
Oh FYI I also listed my 928 for sale on the classifieds.
