I had this on my GT as well. There is a star washer that can be installed on the wrong side of the TO bearing that will do this exact same thing.

Before I would go any deeper into this I would check the state of the "ball cup bushing" because it is the easiest check to do. Apply some pressure on top of the clutch arm while you're getting this noise. If the noise stops, the bushing has disintegrated and you got to replace it, of course. Doable from the engine compartment but it is a PITA ;-)

See the pic for more clarity.

got the car out this aft and managed several runs in both 2nd and 3rd gears up to the 5k rev point.

the issue is replicated in either gear with no vibration up to 5k rpm then the vibes start with the gear lever shaking quite violently. Pushing in the clutch does not fix the vibration but putting the gear lever in the neutral position does and the lever stops shaking.
Now the car is rolling down the road at ~140kph (90mph), clutch in, gear lever in neutral engine at idle rpm and all is smooth and quiet.

Also, when doing this repeatedly over 12km the clutch pedal 'sticks' to the floor but works perfectly normal once I use my shoe to return it to the up position.

Hi Malcolm, you most likely have a more serious issue regarding the severe vibrations. My post was with reference to you mentioning the following:

"I also hear a noise at idle that goes away with light touch on the clutch pedal.....as if its taking up slack again as if the TO brg is sticking on the shaft."

You may have two different things happening here, sorry to say.

This points to torque tube as when you have the car in gear the wheels turn the shaft. When in neutral the torque tube shaft stops rotating.

Given that it is the TT can the front brg location be verified by dropping the clutch cover?

Malcolm,
Removing the clutch cover will give access to the inside of the torque tube. You should be able to measure the distance to the bearing using a flexible tape measure or similar.
I was not able to see down mine with just my eye. But a boroscope would be great to actually see where the bearing is sitting. Look at the second picture of my post. You can see the coupler and the inside of the torque tube.

I should have done that boroscope peek when I had mine all apart. Hindsight.

Cheers
Glenn

The guide tube bolts to the torque tube with M6 (i think) bolts. The throw out bearing rides on the tube.
