Default help with 3 very newbie easy questions

Hi,

I need a hand with some really basic questions:

I’ve seen in many threads that the oil filler /separator looks nothing like what I think is mine - pic 3 the yellow cap (there is no screen inside it)

I read too many of the air pump hoses etc threads and I’m completely confused.
I’m trying to take care of:

1) the input opening to the air pump filter. It has nothing attached to it. And there’s no filter in there. - pic 1
2) the hose that goes into the bottom of the air filter holder on the passenger side. It’s just not connected at the air filter bottom hole - blue hose in pic 2

Can I leave these 2 things as they are? or should I plug either one or both?

3) the “valve”? that has the hoses coming from the air pump and, going to the air filter has a bracket that is not bolted to anything. - pic 2

I dont see where it gets bolted to.

Thanks for any help
Ron

I'll take pic 3. The filler neck may have a baffle, not really a screen, where it bolts to the block. I don't think it is required; there are aftermarket baffles available.

On my 83 the air pump supplies air initially to the cats during warm up for emissions and then to the air box after they heat up. If you are going to do this you will need to get a new filter and top for the filter holder. If you don't want to get a hose to reconnect to the air box you can simply place a plug in the connection in the air box to close it. Many just remove the air pump system all together if you don't need it to pass emissions testing in your state. I kept mine and have redirected the air from the pump to provide additional cooling for my alternator.

The bracket is bolted to the cam cover on that side along with one of the fuel injection ground leads. There is a defined spot on the cover for the bolt to be screwed into.

It seems given the missing parts the air pump has likely been removed (or perhaps just its belt) - look - is there a pump (pulley & belt) above the AC compressor?

The airpump filter can be just left alone.. You may want to remove the diverter valve - seems likely it isn't doing anything (cap the vacuum line). The air filter box port should probably be capped - but its not so critical - will do little harm (just a little warmer intake air).

SteveG; good to know. I just never saw an oil filler shaped like that, and with small hoses going to it.

Antsmand, for future reference, when you send the air pump output to the alternator, do you use the filter to the air pump or just let the air in ?

Alan: yes there is a pump and the belt too. Also I do have the hose to the airbox but it’s just not connected. Sorry for my confusion.
If I understand it right, the diverter valve is the one shown in my picture and the vacuum line is the small black tube coming out of the valve’s top.?

I think i’ll remove the diverter valve, cap the vacuum line and the air box connection.

When I remove the diverter valve, what do I do to the air pipe that is part of the cats ? can it just stay there with no support from the top ?

I have another question, (shamed to ask). The bolts - 3 on each side - connecting the exhaust manifold to the cat pipes, have nuts with a small ridge on 1 side, does that need to be facing a specific way ?

Thank you all, I appreciate your help
Ron
